This may sound like a dumb question, but is logging on to the BIS site for my carrier only so I can establish a blackberry.com email address?

If this is the case and I choose not to set up an email account, do I lose any other functionality with regards to the BB software installed on my phone?

Thanks in advance!

You don't have to do it through BIS. You can also do it through Gmail itself. Open Gmail and go to filters and put in your Gmail address for not to receive mail from then you will be set. By the way, access Gmail from a desktop to do this and not from your Berry!!

You log in to your BIS account for several things. The main reason is to port over any email addresses that you may have so that your Berry will recognize them and set a little envelope on your desktop for that particular email account. Personally, I use 3 different accounts and use my Verizon(VZW)email address for billing purposes and other bills that I may have.
No you will not lose any type of functions if you don't set up an email address. The main reason for your Berry though is for email unless you already have a different account. If you have no email address set up, you are missing out on the main funtion of the Berry. Just something to think about.

Default how to access the BIS account

What are the specific steps that are required to guarantee the right login to BIS every time?

Sometimes I get this error message:

"
The site cannot be accessed in this manner. Please use the URL or link provided to you by your service provider."

While I am accessing the BIS ( I am AT&T customer) website using the following address:
https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=mycingular

Some other time the address work perfectly, I got to the login page instead of the error message above.

This drive me crazy, as I may need to update my email accounts several times a day and I could not access it.

Thanks for the help

http:// www . telstra.blackberry . com/ or on the device itself, for Telstra Australia...

You will need to register a username and password on the device-based E-Mail setup page before you can use the Web-based version above though.

Post Additional Note

Just to add to Navi_
If any of above website does not work ( give Error message and tell you to use original link),
Just clear the cache memory & history of your browser. then you should be able to use the web address above.

Thanks to all who help me with this .
