I have seen this question a couple of times and wanted to post this up. If anything changes, I (or a mod) will edit the post.

    Details
A microSD media card is a removable flash memory data storage device. When inserted into a BlackBerry smartphone, it can extend the memory available for storing media files such as videos, ring tones, pictures, or songs. The media card is sold separately from the BlackBerry smartphone.

The following table lists BlackBerry Device Software versions and the supported media card size.

BlackBerry Device Software Media Card Size Limit
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.0 Up to 2 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.1 Up to 4 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.2 Up to 4 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.2.196 Up to 8 GB per Verizon Release Notes and confirmed by users.
BlackBerry Device Software 4.3.0 Up to 8 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.0 Up to 8 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.0.81 and later Up to 16 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.6.0 and later Up to 32 GB

I believe all cards above 2GB are technically SDHC cards

because MicroSD only went that high and after that they had to change the card hardware for it to work, hence the "HC" designation at the end. It has different infastructure inside to support larger memory sizes.

if you don't read it through the phone's USB cable, yes you need a special reader. SD is the most popular and available memory card out there today.

If you have an SD camera you can read it in that, many printers have SD slots,

but it you plus in your Storm and activate "Mass Storage Mode" your computer will recognize the 8gb card as if it was a USB thumb drive.
