    Memory Optimization Procedure (MOP)

Our Consumer BlackBerrys come packed full of features, samples, themes and support for highly sophisticated communications. It makes for a great, out of the box experience. It also represents the working limits of the device. The geeks had to stop somewhere, or there would be no free memory at all.

In order to run smoothly, our 'berrys needs roughly 12,000,000 of free space. If it drops much lower, built in low memory programs kicks in and cleans up. It does a great job, clears out all it's temporary files, but it doesn't stop there. It also clears out logs files, messages and past calender entries.

The best defence is a regular back up. The cure is removing the memory consuming stuff.

The simplest way is to do in stages:

CrackBerry 101 contains well documented instructions for the on device work.

    Simple

    Better

    Slightly more difficult

    Full Bore Custom configurations

    Simple:

Install Media Card - 5+ Mb

When you have a Media Card installed, Open Media / Options.

Set Device Memory Limit to 12 Mb and Reserved Pictures Memory to 0 Mb.

(Tip: v4.5 allows you to set DML to 5 Mb. No observed impact on moderate size video playback.)

These setting free up reserved space when no media card is available.

    Remove unused Applications

From your BlackBerry home screen, Options / Advanced Options / Applications ...

Select a candidate for removal and press the Menu key to pop up: View Properties / Delete.

If you choose to delete anything, your device will restart and yield a higher File Free.

    Do not interrupt the Re-Start.

MaxMem on your device, goto http://www.berrycoder.com/maxmem.jad to start the download and automatic install.

This OTA utility will recover quite a bit of additional space, comparable to the advanced steps. Don't forget to delete it when you have finished.

MaxMem must be used with caution, particularly the option to remove Themes. There is no provision for restoring them many optional themes use them for resources. If you go too far, you will have to complete the steps under Better to restore a missing theme.

If you intend to use a third party theme, do not remove the original themes until you have established what dependency exist.

(Tip: When not to use MaxMem: MaxMem Issues)

    http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/how-...ml#post1202440

(Tip: v4.5 OS has a different naming system for the sample images, it will not delete them.)

    __________________________________

    Better:

    Curve 8330 information.

You will need a Windows computer connected by a mini USB cable.

    1. Install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

This was supplied on your BlackBerry CD. If it is not available, you can download the most current version.

(Tip: Install this first and verify your BlackBerry connection. Run Backup/Restore to save your current settings and data.)

(Tip: If you choose to install BlackBerry Desktop Manager, choose "Custom" install and un-select Roxio Media Manager. It will speed things up, a lot.)

    2. Install the BlackBerry Device OS software.

This is the most challenging and critical step.

Choose the correct Carrier from this list:

BlackBerry - BlackBerry Desktop and Device Software Download Sites

Select the model specific BlackBerry OS and download the file.

(Tip: The next couple pages are a little challenging to navigate. Click on the "Next" button and select the "Download" link. BlackBerry requires you to complete an identification form, make sure you select the "I confirm the information set out above is accurate and current: Yes No" button. Do the same at the Terms and Conditions page.)

(Tip: If your carrier does not list your device, you can choose from any other carriers OS. There is one additional step:

Windows XP: Start / Search ... / VENDOR
    Windows Vista: Start / VENDOR

Caution:XML is also the extension used by Microsoft Excel. Double check by verifying the path:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader

Delete this file and it will install correctly on any matching device.)

    Finally:

When presented with the options, select "Save".

After the download has completed, select "Run". Doing the installation from a saved copy is much faster and more reliable then attempting to combine in a single step.

    Slightly more difficult:

Application Loader does most of the work, but there are some things it does not touch.

(Tip: CrackMem replaces the following instructions)

Use Windows File Manager to navigate too:

    Start / Computer / C: Drive / Program Files / Common Files / Research in Motion / Shared / Loader Files ...

These are device directories. Continue navigating too: Device / Java

This directory contains the files used to build a new OS.

Wall Paper - 2 -3 Mb (device dependent)

    net_rim_bb_media_320x240_b.COD
    or
    net_rim_bb_media_240 x 260_b.COD

(Tip: v4.5xx has renamed the file to net_rim_bb_medialoader_320x240_b )
(Tip: v4.5xx has been further updated, the preloaded images are no longer supplied, but a much small file: net_rim_bb_medialoader_folders_XXX x XXX_b.cod (63 Kb) is now present to support custom folders. This file should be left on the device.)

The best way to handle them is to move them to a separate directory.

Create a new directory labeled "Removed Files"

Select the COD file and File / CUT (ctrl+x)
Navigate to the Removed Files directory and File / PASTE (ctrl+v)

This will remove all of the pre-installed wall paper, leaving you with a default background.

(Tip: Folder Edit: Removing these files will have an impact on custom folder selection. )

Installing a SD micro card of 1-4 Gb is a very good idea. There are many sources of Wall Paper that can be downloaded to the Media card. Once it has been installed, use Media Center to view the picture. Option will pop up a list including "Set as Home Screen Image".

Themes - 300 Kb each typical

Themes are supplied by BlackBerry and the carrier. Each device is carrier branded during manufacture, the branding controls the loading of specific theme components. Carrier themes can be removed.

    Native BlackBerry Themes:

    net_rim_theme_bbdimension_zen_320x240_b
    net_rim_theme_bbdimentions_icon_320x240_b
    net_rim_theme_bbdimentions_l_320x240_b
    net_rim_theme_bbdimentions_today_320x240_b

(tip:If you intend to use a third party theme, do not remove the original themes until you have established what dependency exist. )

Push To Talk - 341 Kb

This feature is only installed on AT&T branded phones. Other carrier brands can ignore this instruction.

If you are not using it, remove these files:

    KnJCDE
    net_rim_bb_phone_ptt_app

    Full Bore Custom configurations:

Application Loader manages non-core applications. If there are applications that you will not be using, removing them will free up more memory.

In the following directory, you can select out the modules that make up core applications. Removing them will prevent the application from being installed.

Voice Activated Dialing - 600 Kb

(Tip: Removing VAD will prevent Options / About from displaying correctly. A small price to pay.)

    Password Keeper - 36 Kb

Run Applications Loader to complete the changes.

If there are other applications you want to remove, verify which modules are used with:

Options / Advanced Options / Choose an application.

Use the options button to pop up View Properties. Modules are listed that make up the application.

Keep in mind, other application may share modules.

Some of the functions and programs you are seeing in Reed's list only show up in Application Loader after you've installed your device's OS on your PC. You have to install the OS on your PC before you can remove those functions from your BB.

When you performed Step 2 in Post #1, what OS Version did you get? For the Pearl 8120 from T-Mobile, it should be 4.3.0.115, according to the T-Mobile page. I don't own your device, so I can't verify that. I'm just trying to help you verify that you did get the correct OS installed on your PC.

No. According to the T-Mobile website, 4.3.0.115 is the latest. It doesn't sound like you've done Step 2 in Reed's procedure. Or maybe you downloaded the current OS to your PC per Reed's procedure, but didn't install it on your PC. You have to do both for the subsequent steps to work. I don't have T-Mobile, so I don't know what the download file name will be, but look for it where you downloaded it. It's probably a zip file. Unzip it and install it.

Perfect, you get the benefit of an upgrade while we get your memory issues under control. Don't be concerned with the subversion, each one is tuned for the specific requirements of the Carrier. The core software is unchanged.

Unzipping is a technique that is often used for packing software, but it is not used in BlackBerry device software. The file is an EXE, good to go!

Step 2 is by far the most complex, I may not be through documenting it, and will incorporate feedback.

I'm glad you got through it. That's still not a lot of margin, though. You'll probably want to do it again and be a little more aggressive in what you take out. But now that you know how, the next time will be much easier. And you don't have to go through the OS d/l and installation again, (until you want to upgrade your OS) so that makes it a lot easier as well.
