I'm giving RIM till Q4 of next year to get it's act together on the OS and UI, like many I can't wait till OS6 debuts and as it's stands... I cannot stand OS 5.0 any longer ... If OS6 does not meet my expectations ...

- I was looking at the Android Incredible today, thinking to myself .. wow, if the next series of Storm doesn't workout, I am going to give this Android thing a try. Then it dawned on me that Android will also have made vast improvements on their Android phones. Hmmm, looks like alot of people will make the switch to Android because Android seems to be looking to the future of what a smartphone should be. I like Android phones, although I've never gotten to really mess with Android phones for any real length of time. In the mean time, I'll stick with my BB while keeping my eye on the Android.

05-31-10 08:13 PMLike 0 - "RIM needs to get it's act together", "RIM is light years behind in OS development", etc...are statements we see here all the time, but rarely do folks ever really actually explain what they're complaining about. I think I'd take a lot more of these arguments more seriously if folks were able to specify what RIM's current OS's lack, and what they want to see improved. So many times I read threads like this and all I really see is: "I'm angry my BB isn't a (iPhone/Droid/etc)".
I'm not trying to attack to OP here, as he may very well have legitimate case, but the fact is that different folks have different needs and expectations, and different smart phone makers have different target audiences and approaches to OS development. My experience with iPhone is limited, but I know a few friends that own them, and they often complain about OS feature lacking; I've also personally used Android devices quite a bit, and trust me, they are FAR from perfect. Just remember, the grass isn't always greener on the other side, but the bare patches may be in different places.
I, for example, am pretty satisfied with my Blackberry OS, but if there's one thing that bugs me is application memory allocation. True, they do keep making the app mem partition larger and larger on the newer devices, but it amazes me that in a market where customization and apps rule, they limit so little of the internal memory to supporting them. My S2 has 2GB of internal memory (not counting SD card), and only 1/8 of that is allocated for app memory...and the vast majority of the rest goes unused! Granted, I haven't really had to worry about this since I owned my S1, but it is one area of OS/device development I do think RIM needs to step up on: scalability. Make sure each device supports not only the needs of the technology when it's being developed, but also once it's live in the wild. People don't like spending money on devices that are obsolete shortly after they buy them.05-31-10 08:21 PMLike 0 - Am I the only one here that doesn't care how good a UI looks, or how many apps are in an app store and what the phone looks like as long as its incredibly functional?
In all honesty, BlackBerry sold three services, and always sold three services: Telephone, Email and Security. If you're that obsessed with using a telephone to do everything imaginable from calculate your tab and tip at a restaurant (incompetence) to paying your monthly bills (laziness) go to an android, go to the iPhone- but don't tell RIM that you're giving them a year because we all know they don't care.05-31-10 08:26 PMLike 0 -
- I'm giving RIM one year to bring out an iphone. Anything less and EVERYONE is going to leave BlackBerry. If they don't bring out an iphone within 12 months, they are doomed forever!!!
Just a hint for the OP. If you're going to demand a company 'fix' their OS, maybe suggest some solid evidence that it's broken. Until then, maybe save your words06-01-10 01:36 AMLike 0 - Yes, write something like this

For the record... I'm not a novice with Blackberry's who talking out his *** about "How I should have never got this phone". Since my entire stay here I never flamed BB, I went from an 8330 to 8900 to 9530 to 9630 to the now and current 9550 ... I been a BB fanatic for 3 years now
I recommended dozens of friends and family to get blackberry's ... so the assumption of me being a troll is not appreciated at all!!!
Now to answer Pete's questions, my main gripes about OS5 are:
- It's just plain old BORING!!! (This is debatable)
- The Browser and browser UI... its ***. Point blank period
- OS Bugs!!!... You know there will always be hackers but Hybrids shouldn't even exist yet a vast majority of Crackberry users use em just to make their BB usable
- Lack of Apps… it’s a no brainier here compared to the other markets
My List of Pros:
- Push email... goes without saying
- Camera... I love it
- Bluetooth features... I love it
- I like the threaded SMS
- I love BB messenger
- Document's to go... I'm also a college student and don't have my laptop on me sometimes, it's such a life saver
- Calendar... I love it
But being a BB user for 3 years now... Nothing really has change. Sure we got a few nice features and add-on's... I'm not knocking that at all
But when I started this thread... I wasn't giving RIM ultimatums lmao. I simply stated that if RIM doesn't improve on there OS I'm jumping ship ... which I finding very hard to not to do
They mite not miss us now, but if they don't get their head out of they ***... they gonna

06-03-10 01:03 PMLike 0 - You're last post is NOTHING new.... this has been beaten over and over again... And over again some more.
The simple answer is go get a new phone... RIM shows no signs of changing who they or what they're about. Yet there still hugely profitable.. Why do you suppose that is? You're wasting your time if you're waiting for something groundbreaking to come out.
I could care less there are a million android phones out there that can walk circles around my phone. IF I did care, I would NOT expect RIM to do anything about it.. I would just go get a new phone to satisfy my taste...
Its like going to the same restaurant over and over again even though their food isnt good, while there are MILLIONS of other restaurants available that are a lot better Would you complain to the chef/owner and expect them to change their entire menu or would you just start going to another restaurant? hmmmm.Last edited by Pi Guy 3.14; 06-03-10 at 01:39 PM.

Yup, the Browser on BB's is nothing more than a glorified WAP browser. But using Opera Mini or Bolt does bring my Storm2 up to the level of the browser on the Moto Devour (android). The only real difference between the Devour's browser or that of the Moto Droid or HTC Incredible is the screen resolution. (Devour = 480 x 320, Droid = 480x800, Inc = 480x854). So you can't fit as much on the screen at the same time as you can with the Droid or Inc.
As for OS bugs, On my Tour, 8900, 9700, 9530, 8130, and others, there haven't been enough BUGS for me to complain about, or ruin my enjoyment of using the device. I have never used Hybrids. I don't need to. The only complaints I've had recently are the 9550's screen actuators sticking, and how some of the leaked OS for it change how they feel/react. But there are bugs impacting my Droid, Devour and Inc. One Example: the Inc has a nasty battery charging bug that really impacts battery life (it doesn't fully charge the battery while powered on, even though the meter reads 100%. You have to power it off to charge, even then it doesn't completely top off the battery!!)
As for Apps. RIM's app world has few (if any) free apps. But there are more places to get apps for blackberry than just RIM's app store. There always has been.
For android I see people suggesting K9 as a mail client, handcent as a SMS app, quick profiles (or the like) to configure sound/ring profiles in one place (but are still incomplete), etc for android. Why? If the basic OS features were good enough, you wouldn't need apps like that.
In Nov I got a Moto Droid, Feb I got the Devour, April I got the Inc. TO ME Screen resolution (for devices with 480x8xx), Web browser, and FREE apps are the main advantage Android has over Blackberry. Where blackberry has efficiency, great email, and good built in functionality (except web browser).
I think PaintDrinkingPete summed it up the best...Originally Posted by PaintDrinkingPetebut the fact is that different folks have different needs and expectations, and different smart phone makers have different target audiences and approaches to OS development.
He is definitely not alone.
The more I use the INC, even with the many dislikes I have for the way things are handled on Android, I'm still not running back to my BB for my personal line. I continue to give android a shot... even though I feel its still really rough around the edges, and in the middle.06-04-10 09:00 AMLike 0 - Making a hybrid OS for a BB line is not hacking, anymore than building a Lego kit is engineering. Additionally, "actually" is used incorrectly approximately 90% of the time it is used in North America. Same goes for "already" and "whenever".
And anybody who thinks BlackBerry phones are "boring" is just taking their capabilities for granted. Crying about "apps" is ridiculous. The majority of the whining comes from people who only have a computer to play Farmville. They bellow and moan about the lack of applications for a mobile platform, but never state which functions they want, much less code the applications to fill the alleged voids. It's not terribly difficult, all it takes is initiative and willpower. If there was a great need for a fart application for the BB, why not make one? Oh right, because RIM devices aren't toys.
When I ask people why they're going to buy an Android phone, they can't answer. They don't even say so much as "I don't know". They simply stop talking, or try to change the subject. This consumerist culture is nauseating. People want want want, because something just has a higher integer, and they can't say why. People think technology is magic. They are not curious, they do not want to learn about anything, much less work to improve it.
If I were a software engineer instead of a hardware engineer, I'd make an app that would invoke display a fake JVM 513 error. I think the name BrickBerry has already been taken.06-04-10 05:43 PMLike 0
