Hey guys, I ran into this problem yesterday while making a call to a friend. I have an 9700. When I was making the call, The dial tone was stuttering/getting cut off and I thought it was my friends phone.

Later the night, I looked at my phone while making another call and I notice on the top left next to the phone icon, it has the two arrows, indicating incoming and outgoing. BUT it also alternates from those 2 arrows to the headphones icon, which I'm assuming you can hear through the headphone jack.

this is not my screenshot, just using it as an example to show the two arrows next to the phone icon. If anyone can help me this would be great. Thank you in advance

i have recorded what it sounds like when i call my voicemail. here it is: YouSendIt: Online File Sharing and collaboration with FTP Replacement - Send Large Files and Email Attachments with Managed File Transfer Solution

i also recorded how my phone looks when im making a call:

update: i plugged in my headphones and there is no stuttering whatsoever, but i still have the same problem without the headphones

i had the EXACT same problem when i got the phone a few days ago, soooo frustrating. anyways, what I did was downgrade to original OS, then upgraded to latest(442). and that 'seems' to have fixed it. i havnt got it since but if i get it again Ill let you know.

also i read somewhere else that what u can do in meantime is if u make a call and that happens, press the Options key and click 'Activate Handset' or watever, see if that works, or even plug in the 3.5 mm headset that came with the phone that shud work too.

I had this happen to me once also. A battery pull cleared it up and it hasn't happened again since.

Try switching to the media player and plug-in/out the headphones again and let me know if it fixes it. BTW, are you using the stock headphones or something else? Try it with stock if you can.

gwbold9000, what you have mentioned did not work with headphones which weren't stock. I've done many battery pulls, and I am on the stock OS and this issue is still persistent. I don't know what to do as I can't make any phone calls and it's getting a little distressing. Any other ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

This happened to me with my 8900. Stick your head phones in and out a few times and try making a call. Most likely, there is something inside the head phone jack that got caught so it keeps switching back and forth good luck.

The above did not work for me. What I am thinking is doing a backup, then resetting to factory, then restoring. Might this fix the issue?

It was a hardware issue for me. Try the wipe and see if it works. If not then its a hardware issue for you too.

I wiped and made a phone call directly after, and it still occurs. So I am now doing a restore to see if it works.

So I somehow wiped all my applications I had.. and now even with a restore they are gone. This issue is still present.

This is really making me angry. I need to be able to use my phone for work purposes and not being able to make phone calls is putting a damper on my work. I am not even at home currently which makes this even worse.

After doing everything that has happened... Somehow after doing everything suggested above over and over and over again it's somehow finally back to normal.

Hi francisbasco, sorry it didn't work… i'm all out of idea's. Try Kent9000's idea and plug-in/out the headphones many times to see if it fixes it. Unfortunately, it could very well be a HW issue with the jack and needs to be returned or fixed? Try blowing some compressed air into it?

I see you are on AT&T, same as me. I'm running official OS .405, maybe you should update to this one.

So, i just checked what OS i have and i think i'm reading this right, but it says v5.0.0.296. Haha should be I embarrassed? I couldve sworn I updated my OS once.

I'm thinking the chances of an os fixing this problem might be slim because I haven't updated my OS probably since when I got this phone (early December) and I don't know why it would be doing this now. I'll give it a shot

Good news guys. Installed Blackberry Desktop Manager (version 5.0 I think). I had it fully update my phone along with the OS v5.0.0.405. My phone makes normal calls now. Thanks for all the help.

I had this problem off and for about a week two months ago. After plugging and unplugging my headset in and out many times I have not had this happen since. I think it has something to do with the headset jack "breaking in".

same thing on my 8520. usually i dial "00000000000000" just to get in call and i plug the jack in and out until it gets fixed. stupid way to do it, but fixes it.

RIM should definitely do something about it, it's getting really annoying.

after searching the very long string on the problem and found one which suggested something stuck in the headphone port, I blew duster air directly into the headphone port and it fixed the problem
