5.0 OS installation instructions (with mirror installation link) by CrackBerry Storm meh 07:28 AM 07-23-2009 -- [Reply]
Due to the several stories about problems with 5.0 OS, I might as well post specific instructions for downloading this OS to help anyone who is uncertain about their abilities to install this OS. I would like to make clear that although certain blackberry applications such as App World and Application Center will not work in this update, and that you will need to reinstall BBM 5.0 (I will post an OTA link at the bottom.)

As usual, install at your own risk. I have had no problems with this OS - My themes work, slick OS, and all of my applications work. Certain applications may not work, but you can seek help on those applications by searching Crackberry - the problems are probably already known.

Instructions:

- Note. It would be a good idea to uninstall previous OSes using Add/Remove programs now -

1) Install the 5.0.0.140 OS using this link (curiosity of Lyricidal) The mirror installation link already has already removed all of the RIM internal crap, so do not worry about it.

http://www.theiexplorers.com/bb/9530...A5.0.0.140.exe

2) While it is being downloaded, go to your control panel, then to your device manager. Go to your USB ports at the very bottom, right click, go to properties -> power options tab -> Disable your computer's ability to turn off your USB device. Do this for each possible USB hub, including generic USB hub. This will make it so that your computer cannot turn off your blackberry turning the OS upgrade.

3) Open up the OS file which you just downloaded.

4) Go through the whole installation wizard, at the end, do not allow it to open the desktop manager, and press done.

5) Go to "My Computer" -> "(C: )" drive -> Program Files (For 64 bit computers, it is Program Files x86) -> Common Files -> Research in Motion -> AppLoader -> Go to the bottom and delete Vendor.xml -> Click on Loader.exe (7th one in list view) and install. Do not disconnect your Blackberry until it tells you that you are able to.

To install 5.0 Blackberry Messenger, direct your blackberry browser to this link -> http://www.stormota.com/download.php?appID=304
------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the most simple way to install 5.0 - I hope you enjoy the OS. If you have any questions, please post them here.

Here is a link for rapidshare download of the 5.0 OS:

9530AllLang_PBr5.0.0_rel176_PL4.2.0.17_A5.0.0.140. rar

This file has already been cleaned, in other words, it does not include the RIM Internal software.

what if I did allow it to open the DM prior to me going in to delete the RIM folder?

Is there a way to start over?

As long as it did not start booting up the OS, you are alright. Just close out of DM and continue the processes - It is vital that you delete the Vendor.xml

What's the deal with "Disable your computer's ability to turn off your USB device?" I've never heard of that.

Are you suggesting it because it's an extra precaution that you like to take for anything related to BB OS upgrades, or is there something about this upgrade in particular that will turn your phone off and screw things up?

It is a windows 7 power saving feature. I am not sure if it is in Vista or Xp, I am just listing it as a possible precaution. Nothing special about this OS installation

I noticed after installing 5.0 I got a warning that said my USB did not have sufficent power to charge the storm...it was one of the USB ports on my monitor so I am sure they are not as efficent..just my FYI!

This might be easier, no messing with RIM Internal Tools or installing so much stuff just delete what is is in your currently installed OS folder 4.7.X.X... under loader and extract this file to there... just as your old OS was CDMA and all that , use Loader to install to your BB.. worked for me.

http://www.longtermevolution.us/CDMA..._P4.2.0.17.zip

Seems easier to me anyway...
