Default help with banner please!

I am trying to make a banner using gimp, specifically a macosx or android banner (the silverish banner). I am new to the whole graphics thing so how do I make look like its not done in paint? Here is what I am curently doing: 1. Use the rectangle select tool to make the banner,
2. I use the bucket tool to fill in with the grey color.

It turns out like it was done in ms paint. I want it to look good like the ones I see on the forums. Any help would be apreciated. Thanks!

You could try Paint.NET. Just go to www.paint.net and download. It's like paint meets Photoshop. Almost as powerful as photoshop, with the ease of use of ms paint. Plus there are all kinds of plug-ins available for it. Thats what I use. and best of all it's free.

I am not sure why your even using paint if you have gimp. Gimp is way better. Most things opened by paint drop the quality by a lot, and it has limited amounts of file type support.

I just Google banners or 230x21 or stuff like that and hit Google images button. Its Google man just type stuff in and see what hits.
