Those AT&T branded 8900s were probably just prototypes, I doubt those were ever destined to go to actual customers. With this happening I seriously doubt ATT would release a EDGE only phone, that would just be stupid.

So what does this mean for the release of the 8900 on AT&T?

The link doesn't work for me :-)

What a surprise -- AT&T sponsored Gizmodo pulled the post.

Big shock.

Here's the link to the original story:

Thanks for the working link. That's too bad AT&T is doing that.

Hhhmmmm........I couldn't get the original link but I googled it and found it. As blind as corporate CEO's can be sometimes, I think any suit & tie would view this as corporate suicide. Not only will AT&T leave millions "stranded" (me included) but according to the articles I read, they will raise there plans an additional $20 for data and $10 for sms. If this is the case, they are not making a very wise business decision, IMHO. I personally have 8 phones on two "family plans" and I would yank them for another provider. I don't think I'm the only one that would do this, either.
AT&T.....DON'T **** WITH US LIKE THAT. YOU WILL SOON BE THE SMALLEST WIRELESS CARRIER IN THE COUNTRY. :-)

That's funny:-) Seamless smack, I love it.:-)
Seriously, if you think about the big picture, it wouldn't be wise, IMHO! This is just my opinion. There are a lot of peeps out there that will gladly pay $50 for a data plan and $10 for unlimited text. I'm not one of them. Depending on the data/call packages with another carrier, it could be more advantageous for my company, in the long run, to "cut bait" w/AT&T and and buddy up w/another carrier. All of this is speculation tho. What is in print is coming from a "talking head".

The rate increased you are speaking of is pertaining to the iphone and they stated that it would be a 10$ hike for data and 5$ for sms. yes it does suck but after being with at&t for the better part of my life I have sadly come to expect this crap from att. If they tried this with the bb plan I will gladly tell them I will no longer be a customer of theirs. I really don't think its right no matter what :-)

Yes, I see the iPhone is specified. Would think that all like phones would be effected. Also, my cost reference was a bit of exaggeration for emphasis. I got my first AT&T phone # in 1996, my wife has it now. I saw at&t, cingular, and at&t. It would be a shame, and a huge hassle to
leave but I will not be held hostage by a wireless phone company. I believe AT&T can see this. Maybe the satisfaction for longtime customers is not a priority for them. I am certainly not going to speculate @ this point. I plan "exit strategies" for a lot of business moves and this "rumor" will have me planning another.

I believe the rate hike referred to in the article is the cost of the data plan going from the original iPhone to the new iPhone 3G when they lowered the cost of the iPhone but raised the cost of the data plan.

I might be able to understand this if AT&T or any other provider had converted and were carrying ONLY 3G phone, but that is not the case right now... they are just TOO big of a company!!!

I feel sorry for those who bought their 8320. I had no complaints about it. Of course it was on T-Mobile's non-neutered EDGE network.
