I bought an 8120 off ebay a couple months ago. I do not have a data plan and had intentions of experimenting with the wifi feature while using the phone for my current unlimited voice plan.
I can not make calls out unless I add a 1 plus the area code. If not I get a message stating the international call I dialed can not be completed. I received this months bill and although no additional charges, I had several new categories of international calls - all calls made last moth were identified as international but charged as local included.
So, I guess my question is, can I make this phone american while keeping it unlocked ? My signal reception is very unstable and I tried using 2 different bluetooth headsets that the phone had to be no more than 3" away in order to work. Will changing this phone over possibly make things better for Bluetooth and GSM reception?
So far I like the phone, I am just asking for the basics-local ID, simple dialing, and bluetooth. Beware of ebay, this phone was listed as factory refurb but I think it was just a recase.

Thanks for any help on this.

Hi everyone,

I am very new Blackberry. Using Verizon, I backedup my contacts and then downloaded the CSV file to my Mac. What is the easiest way to get these files onto my new Pearl 8130? Intellisync isn't showing, when I try to restore - not recognizing the file and yes I have synched and updated the latest versions for the 8130. Any ideas or help? I have been scouring the net, forums, etc. and can't find help on Blackberry or Verizon either, at least not for MAC users.

Thanks
John

I upgraded to the new OS, and have immediately noticed significantly worse battery performance. Whereas I could easily go two or three days without needing to charge my phone, I find myself needing to charge it completely once a day.

I can go to bed with a full battery, and wake up with 85%, without any activity on the phone. Can anyone think of any reasons for this? I left my house this morning with approximately 95% battery life, and it is now 1pm, and I am at 45%, with barely any 'usage' other than the occasional email, and two brief phone calls.

Does this new OS work the 'signal' much stronger? I have noticed that I have 'full bars' much more often than I used to, so I assume that the battery drain is a result of a stronger signal. Is there anything I can do to make my battery life better? I am not running any background applications, other than the usual 5 that can not be 'shut down'.

I'm a bit perplexed. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,

I have a Pearl 8130 running v4.5.0.127 Platform 3.4.2.20. When I bought it, it had the older version of BB Messenger and my friend recently convinced me to upgrade to the 5.0.0.33. Okay, I may be all alone in saying this, but I hate it! For what I use BB Messenger for, I just don't like it. I liked being able to just see pics and voice notes instead of having to save them, and I especially hate it when I have to ask someone to resend a pic because it "expired," which never happened before. I have also noticed that my BB overall runs slower now, I have to reboot more often, and the battery drains about 3 times quicker.

I really want to put the older messenger back on my phone, but I can't find it. When I go to download it, I get the message for the "new and improved" messenger. Is there anywhere I can find the old one to reload on my phone?

Thanks for your help!!

Software Name: BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.5.0.302 (Multilanguage)
File Name: 8110M_PBr4.5.0_rel302_PL2.7.0.105_A4.5.0.180_Vodaf one_UK.exe
Download Size: 98.108 MB
Language: English
Published Date: 11/16/2009

Instructions to install on ANY 8110 from ANY CARRIER.

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons
and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.
