Hey

I just purchased a new blackberry bold 9700 from Bell yesterday and have a few questions regarding wifi. First of all I am on a 500mb data plan through 3g services. How do I know whether Im connected to Wifi or not? Ive set up my BB with my router and see the wifi icon.

My concern is that when I turn off my Mobile Network(or just data services) I cant use wifi only on the browser. I receive a message "You are not currently in an area that can handle data communication. As a result, the Browser cannot retrieve any Web Pages" So have I been using data and not wifi this whole time? im really confused any help would be appreciated.

ps I have run through the guide on setting up wifi from this site using the given configurations.

Thanks

So I was just reading reviews of the 9700, and it talks about UMA. So from what I understand, if I have wifi in my room, that acts like a cell tower, so I should have flawless reception anywhere I can get a wifi signal? Is this a feature unique to the 9700 so far? I'm on Verizon and am hating my reception in my dorm, and I heard ATT is better where i'm at, plus with this thrown in, it would be worth the ETF. Thanks!

Hi there,
I have done some searching around but can't seem to find any info the the specific problem I have with my 8900.
The Wifi says it is connected to my home router although the Wifi symbol occasionally greys out. When I take a look in the connection manager it also reports that it is connected with the green tick next to the name of the router. The trouble is that although it would seem that everything is ok connection wise I still can't access the internet. Any ideas?

I hope that this has not been covered before; only my second post and I don't want to be redundant.

My BB Bold (9000) for ATT has never been able to stay connected to or connect to WiFi (always questionable what would happen). My wife's connects without problem, and I set up both of them; we got them during late August.

I've tried soft resets, battery pulls, and master resets, with no change. I've changed channels on the wireless router, changed my proximity to the router, tried other WiFi spots other than home, deleted and re-established the WiFi identities, changed sim cards, etc.

Today I took the BB to an ATT service center, and they exchanged it for a new/refurbished unit (9000).

Guess what, still not able to connect to WiFi. But my wife's has connectivity, without problems.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I've hunted online and in various forums, and have had no luck. Also checked the "Complete WiFi" .pdf guide posted on these forums.

It's all turning me from a BB user to a BB curser. HELP (please)!

I'm on VzW and I'm trying to figure out which of Verizon's new and coming Blackberrys, maybe Droids, I want to upgrade to. Primarily I want to leverage Wi-Fi capability because I've got barely 2 bars at the house. I just set up Connectify on my Win 7 notebook as my Wi-Fi hotspot. I'm reading, and suddenly realize, that Wi-Fi for my VzW Blackberry gets me strong signal but only for data, not voice.

I read that TMob has a way to have data and calls travel simultaneously through Wi-Fi. Not Verizon.

Is this a limitation of the phone or a way for the Telcos to retain demand and revenues?

Also, I'm interested in any ideas and suggestions you may have for preferred setups (smartphone and carrier) that support voice and data Wi-Fi.

Thanks!

I recently tried the WiFi on the 9550 - strange thing was the speed wasn't all that impressive. I went to ipchicken to see what my IP was, and instead of being the IP of the network I was on (home network, I know my IP) it showed a different one. Does WiFi traffic still go through BIS or something?

I double checked that I wasn't going over EVDO because I disabled the radio - it was pure WiFi. Also, I know I was connected to my home network, not some random Linksys or public network.

Thanks.
