It’s probably the oldest question in the (developers) book. The developer site for Blackberry quite clearly (and rightly) states, that if you have experience with AIR you should consider the AIR SDK, while prior knowledge of HTML5 and Javascript should convince you to consider Webworks API for Playbook development. I, however, know neither. I know my way around programming in general and have recently have done quite a bit of coding in Python within the confines of a 3D application (okay: Autodesk Softimage). But the obvious question would be, as I hardly even have the time and energy to learn a new set of tools at all, which one should I choose? At the moment the Webworks side of things looks most tempting as it seems to have more practical applications in the not so mobile world, should my love with the Playbook ever sour. But I’m at that wonderful state, where my mind isn’t yet fully made up and I am willing to be proven wrong. So what are the pros and cons of these two approaches. And BTW, I most definitely won’t be “going native”, C and C++ are not my cup of tea, so to speak…

Does the PlayBook *need* the Hub?

After reading all about how the PlayBook may not run BB10 as effectively as the new BB10 devices (due to only having 1GB of RAM), I started thinking about what the PlayBook actually NEEDS out of a BB10 update.

Personally, I don't use my PlayBook in the same ways as I use my Z10. I don't use it regularly for messages, BBM, etc. My phone is always in my pocket, whereas my PlayBook may be on a desk somewhere else. Though it is portable, it is not the same as always having a phone in your pocket.

That being said, if the PlayBook can get an effective BB Bridge app that just mirrors the phone, wouldn't that require less of the device than having to add accounts, etc to the PlayBook itself? Would this be a possible way to keep BB10 on the PlayBook "smaller" in terms of the load on the device?

The Hub is awesome on the Z10/Q10, but I don't know if it would useful on the PlayBook, especially since I believe most tablets are not necessarily used as communications devices, but rather more so as Media devices. I also couldn't imagine doing the Hub gesture on a 7 inch screen. It works so well with just the flick of a thumb on the Z10, but I don't know how effectively something similar on the PB would work.

Hello!

I own a BB Playbook but I put it aside for quite some time and I got the nasty surprise one day that I could not recharge the damn thing because the battery had too low voltage. Basically, I tried at first to recharge it with the provided charger, no success. Then did my homework online and I found out everything about this issue.

I then followed what was said online, i.e. by installing the desktop app and by doing the software update.

Here the thing: everything goes smoothly, the new OS is downloading onto my computer, then when it is time to connect to the Playbook device, I hear the USB disconnect "sound", the LED is yellow flashing and then nada, niet.

So basically, it looks like the PC never got a chance to connect to the Playbook. I am pretty much stuck with this at that point and I don't know what to do next.

Shall I throw this damn playbook against the wall, get a hammer and destroy this crappy designed device, swearing at the engineering team that decided to be O.K. with that stupid spec (if voltage goes below such, you can't recharge it, wtf? What happened to the good hardware engineering common sense??

Thank you guys!

Hey everyone,

Currently thinking of buying a BlackBerry Playbook at the end of the month but haven't fully made up my mind as of yet.

Firstly how much should I pay? I've looked through Ebay & I can get a 64GB Wifi dual 1Ghz cpu in a refurbished condition for £81.

Secondly I have noticed that it has a front facing camera is skype available for the Playbook? As this would be a huge +1 for me.

Lastly, if anyone has had any experience with the BlackBerry PlayBook would be great to know about the pros & cons about the tablet.

While we wait for BB10 to come to the PlayBook and desperately at that, honestly, I can understand the delay. They need to work out redundancies in the OS to deal with the larger screen. At least that's what I think, and don't mind the waiting at all. My PlayBook serves my needs perfectly atm. Only thing I'd love is for full BlackBerry Bridge like before or at least to have the Remember app with Bridge. But that's something I can ignore for now.
Now here are my thoughts on what I'd love the PlayBook and the BlackBerry 10 platform to be together.

What I'd really like is a way for my PlayBook and phone to be truly one. Like if I'm writing a doc with Docs to go on one device I can just bump it to continue on another device, like PlayBook to BB10 phone and vice versa if I wanted or needed to. Not like save the file and then open it with Box or similar service in the next device. I want to be able to just "push" it to my PlayBook / phone so that it's already there when I reach for it.

Sort of how we push websites from the browser to the PlayBook already but for more apps and for into work both ways. This would seriously help declutter some desks.
Imagine using the PlayBook as your desktop by connecting it to a monitor a BT Keyboard and mouse by just pushing a file to it and having it there for waiting for you, instead of the other way around, before you even sit at your desk, and if you need to move from your desk but still have work to do, you can just push it to your phone if you can't take your PlayBook with you and "Keep Moving" with your virtual workplace with you at all times.
Something else that would be cool is to have the ability to have one's phone as a remote for the PlayBook while it's in a game. Imagine you open a game in your PlayBook while it's hooked to a TV and using your remote as a controller.
Now all this would be amazing and by all means seems feasible, now if BlackBerry do it is another thing and if they do do it right, they would be the first to tap into such a market. Now what do you guys think? Should we continue to complain about the lack of an update, or should we wait patiently to see what BlackBerry is working on for the PlayBook?
