Well I went to get my warranty 9000 today and decided to go to Tmobile and see what this 9700 hype was all about and checked it out briefly. Here are my impressions:-

(1)The phone is small but not smaller than most cell phones on the market. It is a lot smaller than the 9000 and closer to the 8900 size but not far off from my wife's E71.

(2) Typing on the 9700 will not be that hard to get used to as I haved played around with both my previous unworking 9000 and my E71. When I typed test messages in the store, on a quick type, I was more than 80% accurate and made minimal mistakes.

(2b) I attribute this to its keypad because although it is smaller than the 9000 it has a similar structure that causes you to grasp the key easier to type your document. In regards to the E71 I would say the key might be slightly bigger and that might be due to the contour as well but it is much better to type on than the E71 IMO!

(2c) I would like to mention that pressing the top keys on the keypad, if pressing them hard, would affect the the screen by squishing in the lcd on the bottom a bit depending on the pressure applied. Both my 9000 bolds do the same thing so it is not special to the 9700...Actually it is more expected due to the more compact form structure!

(3) Next I examined the trackpad which seemed to be a bit of contention for everyone. It might have a slight lean but for the most part it was flat to the surface. The 8520 I tested bulged a bit more and was harder to control and less fluid. Honestly all the 9700 I tried and including the 8520 somewhat resembled a flush square small joystick...none was fixed in one position and as I moved from left to right the trackpad would follow the direction of my finger's movement against its chrome housing and it also did this going up and down. I do not know if it is a design flaw but it was consistent in both the 8520 and 9700's that were there.
The trackpad is a dream to work with and at the setting in the store I was able to navigate very easily with it as I said it is like a flush joystick and nothing like the trackball which bothered my thumb after heavy use.

(4) On to the music player..If you are expecting 9000 bold's speakers or E71's speakers or 5800, N95's speakers etc or your phone must be some form of excellent musical entertainment system then this phone is not for you. This phone is no where near the speaker quality or loudness of those phones but it is just adequate for listing to music(Definately Not for the musical enthusiast). Everything is toned down and the 1 speaker does not help either! It would be a business phone for me, so its OK music player would get me through the day. I already have bose speaker systems in my home and car that suit me adequately!

I was'nt able to do more testing because my wife was with me and wanted to go, plus the lady was trying her best to get us to sign on to Tmobile and interupted my testing several times. Mid 400's was the quoted no contract price.

as a staunch blackberry user for the past 3 years, my curve has been a workhorse. I tried an iPhone at the beginning of the year, the typing was too hard, there was no one touch voice dialing, no copy/paste, and there is no unified mailbox. All of these were good reasons to go back to the blackberry after 3 weeks of trial use. I really wanted to love the iPhone but it couldn't do what the blackberry did. I would tell people the iPhone is the most incredible media device, that happens to have an app for phone and an app for mail, neither particularly good. Whereas, the BB, does phone and email great and everything else somewhat ok.

Now I finally upgraded to the 9700, and seriously is this the best RIM could do after all this time? Meanwhile, OS 3.x allows the iPhone to type much easier with a landscape keyboard, utilize the main button for voice dialing, implemented copy/paste, and has unified messaging on horizon.

What has RIM done? add wifi? it's a bit zippier but seriously, it's not much more than a newer curve and the price is outrageous, even at 199.

It's not as if I didn't know the exact features of the 9700; nonetheless, RIM, I think the love affair may be coming to an end.

I am getting my 9700 at the beginning of the week (coming through the mail). I currently have an 8900 & love it. I've been browsing through the forums and saw a lot of advantages/improvements (battery life, trackpad, etc). I'm just curious to hear from current 9700 owners about their favorite features so far!
