    Filipinos refers to citizens of the Philippines. Filipina or pinay for women. Filipino or pinoy for men. But sometimes, pinoy can be used to represent people from the Philippines.

    To put it simply, Filipino is standardized Tagalog, with the addition of loan words from foreign languages such as English and Spanish. In terms of Tagalog being a dialect, Dr. Ricardo Nolasco, holding a doctorate in linguistics and a board member of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines said, "[To distinguish] a language from a dialect is: different grammar, different language. "Filipino", "Pilipino" and "Tagalog" share identical grammar. They have the same determiners (ang, ng and sa); the same personal pronouns (siya, ako, niya, kanila, etc.); the same demonstrative pronouns (ito, iyan, doon, etc.); the same linkers (na, at and ay); the same particles (na and pa); and the same verbal affixes -in, -an, i- and -um-. In short, same grammar, same language."
