You guys all seem to be knowledgable BB Messengers....maybe someone can help me??

I have not used it yet, but one of my BB buddies said, "Oh, it's great, you can message anyone with a BB, regardless of provider, etc". So I went to add a contact (using his name/phone number, no PIN, since we're BB stupid and can't find it). On my phone, it says "Contact 'NAME' Pending". On his phone, it says the request has been accepted. What gives? Is it easier to use the PIN number? I think I found my PIN under "Status"...is that right? (Pearl 8130)
