Jesus freak I actually consider a compliment. In fact this term may have originated in the 60s or 70s. I'm not real familiar with the hippie (sp?) era, but I know that song from DC Talk popularized the term for my generation. Here's some info from wikipedia: Jesus freak - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As for the term bible thumper I definitely think that is a derogatory term. At least I would not be pleased to have the term applied to me. I'm not one to cram the bible on someone else. My approach to reaching out to others is to share my testimony and reach to where they are at. By this I don't mean that to reach say an alcoholic to go to the bar drinking with him or her. But I certainly wouldn't tell them stop drinking or your going to burn in **** either. To me that statement would be considered bible thumping.

Amen,
My point exactly. Bible Thumper and Holy Roller has such negative meanings that most people don't know about.
Jesus Freak IS a reference from the 60-70's of those Hippies who converted to Christianity. They were considered weird (as we all are) and I remember seeing a special on this a few months ago.
LOL about the Burn in **** sentence! We are not REQUIRED in the 'Commission' to cram The Good News down anyone's throat. We are required to GO, PREACH, TEACH and GIVE the Word of God and he will do the rest.
I've taken two classes in seminary about this exact issue and it's amazing that some people think it's their solemn duty to give the word, and force a person to convert. That is not their job. It is he job of the Holy Spirit to convict them and CONVINCE them they are lost, and then HE will draw them to the conclusion they are a sinner and need to accept the atonement which is only found in Christ.
I think a lot of people in the Church need to get back to basics. The Commission is not that deep as people make it out to be. Geesh.
JUST GO, GIVE and let God be God.
*steps down from the pedestal*
And yes, DC TALK is my favorite group. When I first got saved in 1996 I remembered them being on Entertainment Tonight as a kid and I went to get all of their cd's.
Now I am the biggest fan of Toby's solo work and Mike Tait's band Tait. I've never been a fan of Kevin's solo work. I absolutely adore his voice, but his two solo albums...something doesn't work for me. - 09-28-2008, 02:05 PM #278
hi all i am a Christian and have been for many years keep on posting people.
Jerry - 09-28-2008, 02:33 PM #279
Hi Jerry,
Welcome to the thread.
Please pray for me ya'll lol
I had a real evil meltdown after service today.
I know God has gifted me with MANY gifts and talents...but I feel sometimes people expect me to just jump when they ask me to do something.
I had planned on coming straight home to work on my papers for class, and before I could grab my stuff my mom is asking me to do something for her and my assistant pastor.
Let me just say, I almost had a hissy fit. I was so angry because both of them ask me to do graphic stuff at the last minute without considering I'm in seminary and my life is full of papers, homework and lack of sleep.
Any other time they can ask, but don't ask me the day you need something done when someone was picking it up in 15 minutes. That is not fair to me and I'm being made to feel guilty because I got upset.
I know my attitude was wrong, and I should have reacted differently, but sometimes I don't think people respect the gifts, talents and times of other people.
Why didn't my mom ask me to do this the other day when I wasn't busy and we went shopping at Walmart together? If she would have asked me then, I wouldn't have minded staying after church today and doing it. But it took an hour and a half out of my time for schoolwork to do a project that I was asked to do 20 minutes before it was due.
*repents for her bad temper*
Thanks for listening. - 09-28-2008, 02:53 PM #280
i will pray for you now.

I totally understand your frustration. It is ok for us to have these kinds of emotional reactions as long as we do the right thing in the situation. I believe it would have been worse had you chosen not to help out. The good thing is from this situation you have come out learning of a minor part of your character nature to work on. God contantly works on us in all sorts of ways. I hope you find this encouraging.

I'm ok now. I repented of my attitude and as someone else (actually two people) mentioned its still something God is pointing out to me about my character. I keep getting this test over and over and I know it's because I haven't learned how to just do whenever I'm asked.
Its hard...but...I gotta pass this test and allow the Lord to purge me of this behavior. Pruning SUCKS, but I'm glad he loves me enough to do what he has to do to get me to perfection. - 09-30-2008, 12:12 AM #284
I understand this is meant as derogatory, but what it really says is someone noticed you act enough like Jesus as to be noticed. I find it rather a compliment. As a wise man once said "If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?"
So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. Rev. 3:16 - 09-30-2008, 05:47 PM #285
glass half full
That's the way to look at it. Optimism is refreshing in these times. Well, I have continued reading the ESV Bible and can't stop thinking how much I've already started to change. Even my wife is noticing that I no longer curse and am not the usual, irritable husband I once was. Hopefully, I keep it up and continue to become the husband and father my family need me to be. Have a great day and God bless!
IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!

God's grace will continue to keep you! Ypu have me ready to go and get the ESV. Especially when I read about the cursing part and being irritible. That's me, well I will say...that WAS me! Now Faith is! God bless you and your family...

Yup. It's funny, God's timing. I am actually working on a paper for my Leadership class and the assignment was about our spiritual gifts lol lol
And you know I'm going to use this example as an area God is continuing to work on.
This thread is awesome. I'm so glad I found it too. And to my Jewish poster above. Welcome. I love seeing God's people come to salvation. Do you mind sharing your conversion story with us? - 10-01-2008, 07:19 AM #290
I am thinking of doing an article on my blog about how BB enhances our respective walks. How does your device simplify your christian life?
I'd love some material... share how you do (or can) use your device for spiritual matters (devotion, networking, study, etc). - 10-01-2008, 07:49 AM

If you consider that my BB allows me to utilize time most efficiently I suppose it could be considered helping me not waste time. But I'm not sure if that is what you are looking for. I do reference the bible when I'm not at home on it or my palm T5 depending on if I have the T5 with me. I prefer to use olive tree on my T5 because I have access to more translations on it. I use PC study bible for study at home. Oh I guess you could say for spiritual things I use my BB to organize grouping up and doing stuff with my fellow christian friends.

My Bible is on my BlackBerry. Can't thump it...
what is the application? I used to have it on my palm pilot and loved it. I now, just use BibleGateway.com: A searchable online Bible in over 100 versions and 50 languages. but would rather have an app. - 10-01-2008, 09:41 AM #296
Carmie, are you using the WAP version? Wap.crackberry.com. If you are then plz specify further your difficulty so we can all contribute to solving your difficulty. On the otherhand, if your using the pc version www.crackberry.com then yes, your experience from your bb will be tedious. It took me about 2 months of struggle and frustration until I found WAP edition, then its all downhill
For even easier CB have you downloaded the Crackberry Launcher, direct over the air to your device? Then your just one click away.
Carmie, regarding your walk with the Lord. Consider that short statement. Its you and you alone who walks with Him. He isn't interested in your relationship with His Body (when He's ready He will direct your steps), He knows well how to manage and order its many various parts for the good of the whole, don't worry or panic. Its Him and your heart. Period. YOU are the Church, YOU alone.
There was a brother above a few posts back who traveled much away from family, and in diverse lonely places gave messages of hope, alone from any church, to the lonely, the broken hearted, the broken and the trapped. God had processed Him (and no doubt still is) to operate independantly in places of great darkness. Won't his light therefore shine all the more greatly? If you place 100 light bulbs in one room of what help does that bring to the other rooms without light? Jesus wants you to be completely dependant upon Him and not upon anything else. Remember, he told the disciples to not take bag or clothes? Don't take this literally, get instead the spirit behind it. If you only depend upon Him and not upon humans, or even churches, who or what can oppose you? Praise God.
Consider Abraham, alone with His maker was considered His friend. Consider Moses, alone with his sheep in the wilderness for 40 years until his discipline with God was complete (then he was ready to lead God's ppl). Consider Samson, who could oppose him? Consider Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest. Did he consider etiquette or what the community thought or was he solely zealous for his God? Finally consider Paul, who glorified the Lord's name wherever his feet were directed, mostly alone in darkness. Yet by the end had written God's Word. Slumber Carmie and work Carmie in His Word and in private give Him your heart. He will guide your feet to the place He wants you to be if you keep His Word.
Bless you and be blessed.
To Dizzy, wow I wouldn't know where to begin! I'm gonna have to think on it a little then post back. I have to say one thing though, and I've heard this many many times and its a fundamental error many in the Body make and are making. His people are those who obey Him. Accepting His Son as King of their heart are His people. His people are not a worldly nation, race or religion (as you know). What you refer to ended when the Lord gave up the Ghost at Cavalry and the veil of the Temple was rent. From then on there was The Way and the World: the former Godly the latter utterly corrupt, with nothing in between.
I came out of a religion like any other religion INTO His people, not coming from His people into His people again...how would that work? Gentiles come FROM something, INTO His people. Can you imagine calling any other religion 'His people'?! Nope, and you agee. Rabbinic Judaism is exactly the same. Based upon not the Written Word, but upon the Talmud, the work of Men's hands. And the latter has authority over the former. Ask a Rabbi
Bless you Dizzy and i promise, that when i have formed something concise, unlike this post, i shall return with your loving request.

misconceptions
Good morning. I have to say that being Catholic, I had grown up listening to all different types of stereotypical rumors about other religions. I'm sure I'm not alone there. One of which, Christianity pushed really hard to convert others to their religion. I'm finding, through this thread, that this is just false. You all have been nothing but possitive and inspirational. No one has " pitched switching over " to me yet. This thread is one of the few out there that is almost always about good experiences, happiness and valuable lessons in life. It's the first thread I check in the morning and it starts my day off right.
Don't mean to go on and on... but just thought it should be said. Have a great day and God bless.

Blackberry and Ministry
I have a Curve and live in Walker, LA where I am the pastor of a small Methodist church, Mangum Chapel UMC. Being small, resources need to be combined. With this in mind, how has the BB helped in my ministry?
1. I use Noahs Bible Software and having a quick search tool handy is invaluable. I have actually pulled it up in a Bible study, ours and another I attend and was able to get a reference. Being able to select a larger font when needed is an added bonus.
2. The most important. My congregation and anyone needing me can easily reach me. When Gustav hit, we had no electricity, landline or cellular voice. Text messages did work. Our church and congregation is in an area hit by the hurricane.
3. I use the BB to have immediate notification of emails related to the church and my congregation.
If you want to know more about how my BB has helped me in my ministry, just PIN me. - 10-01-2008, 11:14 AM #299
umm well cough, cough Sirfox,
I dunno who you are but you are testifying to the word of LORD spoken over me from Him, personally June 2002. He spoke that he was leading me into a Vally of Sorrow. All that you said, is what He has been whispering to my heart but it has been 5 years and I have grown weary. The first 3 were full of fire and an extraordinary relational growth with Him, ladden with a new comprehension of His unending compassion for me and all sinners(in their current state of sin). The 4th was, well, more like when you have done all you can do: stand. The 5th year began June 13th and since has most wobbly, full of questioning-God are you sure, are you there, are you listening- kind of time and accompanied with unbearable leg pain(began in January). Soooooo thank you for truly listening and speaking not empty words or providing"rolladex answers". In these times we are all going to need to provide a hope that lays within us, which will have substance, meaning and provide change.

Carmie.
He has you exactly in the place He wants you to be.
He has branded you with the searing heat of His Mercy.
Now prepare yourself with prayers: pray now a new prayer. Pray for Him to reveal His Power. Only you will be allowed to see it, and when you do, your tears of joy will be unfathomable to the rest of the Earth.
Man of God, Mighty Man, His Shadow will overpower you.
ALL Power is HIS.
