Hi i have finished the HelloWorld code and when I try to run the simulator it wont work but I have downloaded a separate simulator from the blackberry downloads site which is the 8520 model and i opened that up, but to load an application it seem as though the code I have wrote needs to be in a .COD format.

How do I make it into a .COD format?

just compile your application in the RIM JDE and it will create a COD file in your project folder
