I am very happy to report back to you all that I have found a workaround that has worked for me.
Give this a try:
Go in the Back Up, select Custom and select the box next to Data type (so that you can back up everything) or select the fields you need BUT, before hitting that Back Up button, EXCLUDE SOCIAL FEEDS DATA FROM THE BACK UP BY UNCHECKING THE SOCIAL FEEDS BOX!
Please let me know if it works for you & if not, please tell me your model, your OS version & the version of DM that you are running.
Your solution just worked for me -- a life-saver, thanks!
By the way, I had to use Task Manager to kill the DM software after in hung. While the phone came back to life, it would no longer connect to DM. Found that I had to reboot the phone to permit connection to DM, so I could try you fix.
So I've just downloaded Blackberry Desktop Manager 6 and tried opening it and syncing my phone BB torch 9810. It goes straight to back up and stalls once it hits Smart Card Options.
I can't even get it to recognize my phone in order to try the fix... Any recommendations? It goes straight to backing up my phone but doesn't give me any other options to use.
I finally figured out how to get past all of this nonsense. After reading quite a few forums, I realized that the problem was the 'Social Feeds' app. The best way to fix the problem is to delete the Social Feeds app from your device using the application manager on your device. Also, another thing I did was to delete 'Smart Card Options' from my device using the Desktop Software. This article explains how:
I found the fix but I can not even open the "back up now" to turn off the social media. My phone has not been synced in two weeks do to this. Any ideas?

Reason: added phone
I am having the same issue, in that most of my 'backup options' are not clickable to uncheck the social media for backup I'm so annoyed with this, it feels like rocket science when something seemingly so simple just doesn't work
