Default Phone isn't recognised after "Forget Device"

I was having problems with Desktop Manager not letting me interact with my device. In the hope of fixing the problem I used "Forget Device" on my phone (Storm 9500), closed the application, and started it up again. Unfortunately, the Desktop Manager now doesn't recognise my phone at all. This was also true for the device manager (the little desktop tray which shows you the connected device list).

I tried removing the desktop manager software entirely and reinstalling it. I also attempted restarting my machine. I haven't yet gone as far as resetting all the phone data because without my computer recognising the device I have no way to create a back up.

Any ideas why this has occurred? Is it something to do with the new way DM6 "syncs" with computers?
