Default Taking the plunge - a few questions

Hi all!

I've been a long time iphone user but id like to make the switch to BB. The gf has been bugging me to use BB as she can message me easier with BBIM. I have an ipod touch so my music is taken care of.

But im not sure what BB to go for. Im not going to wait around for a 12 device to come out so I figure the next best thing is going for something with os 7?

I initially looked at the Bold 9900 but I seem to have read more complaints than praises. Shame as it looks a tidy device. The 2 I am looking at are the curve 9360 or the bold 9780. Looks aside, in terms of functionality and performance does the 9780 outperform the 9360? How would you rate the 9360 as a 1st BB device for someone like me?

I like the look of the 9790 but that's not out here in the UK yet and I want to get this phone next week, Monday ideally.

1 additional question I had was, do modern BB devices have a 'limit' on the number of apps you can install before running into performance issues. I'm only really looking to use a handful: facebook, msn messenber/ebuddy, twitter, whats app, bbim and maybe some conversion tool.

Finally i've got some pics and videos I took with my iphone id like to transfer on. Do you know if I can set up folders/galleries for my own pics on a BB? Also can either the 9780 or 9360 handle playback of iphone 4 HD videos?

All advice welcome.

There is so much that is subjective.

My advice is decide which style your prefer. Figure out which models in that style are supported on the carrier (service provider) you are going to use. Then buy the top of the line model of the style you prefer that is supported by your carrier.

On your other questions, I understand there is a numerical limit on the number of apps according to the number of objects or something that the OS can handle. Over my head. But people usually encounter memory capacity limitations first, I would think. However, sounds like your list of apps is going to be relatively short.

Can't help with the media questions. There are media functions. May be limited compared to what you are used to. My advice is download the manual for the device(s) you are considering. Also look for demo videos.

Hello wellred, It is a good idea to grab the best one that fits your needs, and secondly, that you can afford. There are a number of differences, but truly are subjective, as already mentioned. I just bought a 9360 last Wed, and I really like it. I was going for the 9900, but put the money into the Playbook.

YES! There is definitely a limit to the number of apps loaded, that much has not changed with OS7. Your list above will work on both models. On the other hand make sure you check, because I thought the curve has more internal ram 512MB Vs ???, which directly affects what you're asking.
The 9780 has the better camera with auto focus, but the 9360 runs OS7, and has a faster processor. Both models can handle 32GB SD cards for storing your music, docs, and other things, so no difference there. However, on a BB, your apps can not reside and run from the SD card, hence the memory limitations.
For me, I went 9360, because the OS and RAM meant more than the camera, and I actually like the 9360 keyboard.
Cheers!

I would definitely go with something with OS7, whatever you do.
Also, you may change your mind about the apps you'll need/want (and thus storage would make a difference) once you begin playing with your new device.
Welcome to the forums and enjoy!

the 9780 is an OS6 device. If you like the form factor of that then get the 9790. I have that and the battery life on that is sooo much better than the 9900. but since that isnt out yet i would say TORCH 9810. you will get both the full touchscreen and keyboard experience.

If your a long time iphone user than the 9900's battery is pretty much on par with it(I know there are some 9900's with bad batteries) but for the most part are very similar(will last a full day). I think a lot of people are complaining because they've come from BB's that can last 3 or 4 days. I'd get the 9900 and not look back, it's a great phone.

Several iPhones and Androids in between.

As you are coming from an iPhone, don't short yourself and get the older device, just to gain the battery life. Considering you can reboot the Bold 9900 3-4 times in the time a 97XX series takes to go once, that alone improves the user experience dramatically.

You could buy a spare battery and replace it mid-day for a few extra quid, if battery life is that much a concern, and in tandem, probably carry you farther, anyway.

The combo of touchscreen and keyboard is sweet, and I honestly believe you'd find the better device more satisfying.
