Same here on the outrageous "upgrade" fees. When I switched from my old HTC Apache to a Curve 8330 in February 2009, I was in the 2nd year of my contract. I was able to re-up to a new contract for another 2 years at that point, and was only charged a $36 installation/upgrade fee. I was also pointed to ordering through the website for my upgrade phone, and choosing "deliver to store" because that would net me a cheaper price.
Cut to April 2010, and I'm interested in upgrading from my 8330 to a 9630 Tour. However, according to the website, I will now be charged $110 for an ETF. I haven't gone by and spoken with my usual rep in my local store about it just yet . . . but the outright price for the 9630 is $469.99. So now reupping for a 2 year contract only saves me $100 on the price of the phone, instead of $200. Not really worth it for me to upgrade.
Does anyone know why CS changed their upgrade policy, other than more money? If I'm gonna have to put up with the money-hungry tactics from the big services (Verizon/AT&T) I may as well go with them and have a bunch of phones to select from.
