Default I was going to get a Tour but not now

I was just on their website to order it and there are some fees I have never had to pay before early termination fee for the bb and a fee for data. I know I'm trying to upgrade early but have never had to pay a fee to do this.

A friend of mine got hers about a month ago and didn't have to pay anything over the regular price.

Is this something new? Is there anyway not to have to pay these fees?

Its best to goto the store. tell them you lost your phone and want to add another 2 years to your contract. This will only work if your past one tear or real close to your first year

something about an early data termination fee and early device termination fee. All i want to do is upgrade.

Id go into the store but i don't want to give up my curve just in case.

My one year date with this curve was Feb 27.

And committing fraud.....definitely not cool.
It's no wonder prices keep going up.

Same here on the outrageous "upgrade" fees. When I switched from my old HTC Apache to a Curve 8330 in February 2009, I was in the 2nd year of my contract. I was able to re-up to a new contract for another 2 years at that point, and was only charged a $36 installation/upgrade fee. I was also pointed to ordering through the website for my upgrade phone, and choosing "deliver to store" because that would net me a cheaper price.

Cut to April 2010, and I'm interested in upgrading from my 8330 to a 9630 Tour. However, according to the website, I will now be charged $110 for an ETF. I haven't gone by and spoken with my usual rep in my local store about it just yet . . . but the outright price for the 9630 is $469.99. So now reupping for a 2 year contract only saves me $100 on the price of the phone, instead of $200. Not really worth it for me to upgrade.

Does anyone know why CS changed their upgrade policy, other than more money? If I'm gonna have to put up with the money-hungry tactics from the big services (Verizon/AT&T) I may as well go with them and have a bunch of phones to select from.

If you want to upgrade a year into your contract they charge you like a 20.00 early upgrade fee on top of the two year cost of the phone.
I don't go by the website because it's computer generated obviously and is not always accurate.
Just call CS and ask.

I'm 17 months into a 2 year contract. I was considering trying a couple of Hero's for my wife and I. There was an early renewal fee of $49 for each line so I'm gonna wait and see if anything cool commes out.

OP check the fine print on the back of your contact. I am willing to bet that there is something in there about fees charged for early termination. For example

mobile early termination fee $35/month remaining in contract, up to a maximum of $400.
In addition, early data termination fee $15/month remaining in contract, up to a maximum of $300.

Not real numbers (just made them up) but you can see how they get you for the term of your contract one way or the other. Best to talk to customer care/ retentions to see what they can do for you. Good luck

Wait for something else to come out instead of buying a Tour since it is over 6 months old now.

I did get the low-down on ETF/upgrade fees from the really awesome rep at my local CellSouth store:

Used to, you could re-up in the 2nd year of your contract for a $36 fee. This is what I did last year to get my 8330.

Now, their policy has changed: It's $7.50/month for every month left on your voice contract, and $2.50/month for every month left on your data contract.

Can't say I really blame them too much for changing their policy once I thought about it: All the CellSouth customers I know upgrade early into their 2nd year. Doing that really eats away at their subsidized cost on the phones for upgrade pricing. Still sucks, but it makes sense

Sometime around the middle of 2009 they started Pro-rating the smart-phone contract at about 15$/ month.
