Default Openoffice, your thoughts.

I bought my BB in the hopes of using it for my business. I want to be able to create spreadsheets that will brakedown costs, etc. I don't want to spend a lot of money on MSOffice. I was told about Openoffice by someone and did a little searching on the web about it(found mixed reviews). I did a search here and didn't find much. Could someone please tell me if they have used it, and if it works well with their BB. THANX!!

Not sure how you intend to use it with your BB but it is really no different than MS Office. You still get the same apps essentially and can export them to various formats. If you don't care about the big name or aesthetics then its a great find. You would still need some apps on your BB to view/edit the files.

Agreed.

BB_FTE - I'm not sure what you mean when you ask if you can use it with your BB. You can use OpenOffice.Org in lieu of using MS Office on your computer, and it's an awesome alternative. It's completely free, and does pretty much everything that MS Office can do. You can even save documents in the native MS Office format so that people using MS Office can open, edit and save them.

However, neither program really "works" with your BB. You can open and view Word and Excel docs (or those created on OpenOffice), but you can't edit. You would need a program like Docs To Go in order to edit.

Unfortinitly at work we have a mixture of OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office... It is a real hassle with formatting and interopabilty. I would really stick with Microsoft Office.

Also niether program will work on your BlackBerry. I would wait for 4.5 (whenever that is released) or try eOffice. If you want a document editor on your BlackBerry.

Thanks for your responses.
I wanted to create a page on my BB that I could imput information about each load/trip ex.mileage,repairs,income,fuel,etc.
then when I got home I synch with my computer and the info goes to the appropriate spread sheets.

I use MS office at home and my bf has openoffice. On my berry I have gridmagic where I have my budget spreadsheet saved. Gridmagic sync's with my office and open office. It's pretty useful. . . also, 4.5 has docs to go so it will sync with both.

If you want something to track expenses on, Handango, and I'm sure others, have an application called Expense Manager 5.0. You can email yourself a .csv file, which can be imported into any spreadsheet. If that's the extent of what you want to do, it might be worth a lookie.

I track the things you mentioned (I truck for a living as well) with
trackitcustom from javatekmedia.
I can't link you, as I don't have ten posts yet. Guess I'm still on probation, huh? LOL!
It can be manipulated to fit any tracking need, not just eggs and milk. I use it for all my lists and expense tracking.
Good luck, and stay safe!

upgrade your OS to the newest version when you can. Docs to go should be able to work with Open office I believe.

OpenOffice is superior to MSoffice in every way that I know. Moreover, OOo can create, import, edit and export docs (including text, spreadsheets and slide shows) in a variety of alternative formats, including those for MSoffice. The reverse is simply not true b/c the MS business model depends on restricting users' options.

...meanwhile, I can say similar things about RIM. They seem to have little interest in enabling third-party applications to their OS. At least if you have a MS OS on your PC, you can add software at will.

Default Docs to go

I use Docs to Go and Sheet to go quite regularily and I find them excellant. Have upgraded to the latest and use the spread sheet in the truck and email to my mac at home and add to an existing exel sheet that I have going. If you can afford a truck you can afford Docs to go. Its worth it.
