Monetizing mobile media and youtube
I've been considering this for awhile, but I was inspired by a news article yesterday that claims that Hulu may catch up to Youtube in terms of revenue pretty quickly (makes sense, if you think about it). Really, I think sponsored entertainment might be a better business model for media than something like a viral video.
Even if you're on a home computer, youtube has its drawbacks. If a browser finds a product they like in a video there may or may not be a conveniently placed link to a website where they can buy it. Simple branded messages with big laughs come off much better, like gotvmail's Gary Busey campaign ( YouTube - GotVMail is like a Mullet or Mohawk, by Gary Busey), a good example for this forum since they're an advanced voicemail provider. But even there a user has to make the effort to seek the product out.
My question is, I think it's even harder with videos designed to be played on mobiles like the blackberry, because it's a lot harder for people to browse, and they're not as likely to shop using their phone (or am I incorrect in this assumption?). The company I work for is looking at expanding into a mobile ad campaign, but I'm skeptical that it can be accomplished with any certainty. Maybe a long shot, but have any other business users attempted this sort of thing?
