BlackBerry MDS Connection Service error

I'm a BES admin newbe with SBS2003/Exchange. I am getting this server error every minute as MDS starts and then stops: "The BlackBerry MDS Connection Service service terminated unexpectedly." This is a new install and I have tried removing and reinstalling. The version is 4.1.2.20. I only need BES to send/receive email from Exchange to a couple of blackberrys through the cellular carrier. Can I just disable the mds service? If not, how do I fix it? thanks

What level of BES are you at?

Yeah, sorry bout that.... Wasn't reading clearly. Are you able to successfully run the Enterprise Activation on the devices and send/recieve mail? If you do not need to push applications to the devices or surf internal websites then you probably can ignore this error.
