There is a way to remove the policy as noted, but if it's not unregisterd from the old company's server, you won't be able to get it on the new company BES server. It will restore the policy from your old company when you re-sync and activate. You can check if it's done by checking the Password option. Is it enabled and grayed out or can you change it to disabled? If grayed out, previous company's IT policy is in effect. (most companies require password to be enabled)
I would just let your old company BES admin do the work. After its unregistered from previous and has default IT policy, go to BES admin with new company and register it and re-sync to the new server. You will get a new IT Policy from the new company which will have their security requirements for your device.
Should be good to go then.
I personally think wiping the device is a waste of time. But your old company may do it automatically OTA for security reasons (most won't), so make sure you backup everything before you contact them. But as a courtesy to your old company, you should permanently delete anything that could be seen as propriatary to them.
