Default BES Server help & advice needed

Hi Guys,

My first post to this site but have used it for help several times before. Hoping someone can advise me with this problem, wasnt too sure where to post it as its a BES Server related query.

For the last year we've used BIS for all our work email (Exchange 2007)

Due to us now increasing the number of phones we have to 6 and needing more features like the synchronisation of the calendar and outlook I've put in a Blackberry Proffesional Server which I've been told is more or less identical to BES but just limited to a max of 30 users.

I phoned my carrier up today (o2) and asked them to swap my data plan from the BIS plan to the BES plan apparently they're different. They said this can take up to 24hrs.

Ive followed all the instructions on setting up the Server and did it with someone who setup a BES server for there company so im hoping we did it alright. He ran the BES test application and it said it was all successful.

Ive been trying allnight to activate my account from my phone (reset the phone a number of times) and still no joy. Do you think that the carrier can block the use of BES? Normally they say 24hrs and its done within 2hrs but I just wanted someone elses opinion. The phone just keeps retrying.

I took the access off the BESADMIN account and I could see that when my phone was trying to activate it was sending a message to my exchange mailbox something about do not delete this message etc etc. Ive put it back on now and those messages no longer show in my exchange mailbox so I take it the BES is doing something with them before they get too me

Any advice with all this greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Tom

I'm a Notes/Domino guy so I can't speak to the Exchanged stuff, but you seem to be having similar problems to the ones i had trying to activate my phone. The BPS would say you (the user) was "activating" and you'd get the "this message is used by the blackberry server, do not move or delete" message in your inbox, but nothing would happen. In my case it was that my carrier (T-Mobile) hadn't provisioned my phone for BES (doing so cost me an extra $10/mo). If o2 says it takes 24 hours, it is best to wait and see what happens. If you are seeing what I described above then I'm pretty sure it will work when your phone is provisioned.

Hello there !

Been there !
U need to be patient coz a small thing in the configuration can lead to a non-working layout.
I recommend the following.
Check all these things.
1-In the Services.msc on your server make sure that all
services of BB are started. (ALL need to be in a started stated)
when started check the eventlog and make sure u have no error there.
Re-start from over (not the installation. Just the security and rights issue.)
check the logs of the BPS (located in c:\program files\Reseasch In Motion\BPSServer\logs\dd-mm-yy folder
read the logs carefully it will lead you to where is the pb.

Use the message tracking features of Exchange - while the device is attempting to activate you should see an email arrive at the users activation email address from network@etpNNNN.etp.eu.blackberry.net - NNNN being a pseudo random 4 digit number and change eu for your region.

If this message is not arriving make sure you dont have any AntiSpam at your mail gateway that might be blocking it.

If this message is coming in, make sure it isnt moved out of the users inbox by client antispam or Outlook rules.

If the message is arriving and you still have problems look at the Blackberry *_MAGT_* log files to see if you can see what is happening - search for network@etp within the log file.
