Forgetful Bluetooth

Having this issue with new 9850 but have had it before off and on with the old 9530.
BB pairs up fine with car using instructions on-screen on both BB and car; but then forgets the pairing and refuses to repair (after many uneventful uses). What's up with that?
I've cruised through all the options on both car and BB and am still stuck. Then again it may work the next time? What's the deal here?

It gets even worse. The volume goes down with each BT device paired to 9850.
This includes call volume and notification volume. Turning off BT does not help notification volume. I paired first device and call volume was good. Paired second device call volume not so good. Paired third device, call volume barely there. Can't hear notifications with phone right beside me. Volume set to 10.
Yeah, I know, makes no sense. Shades of Storm2.

Swell. I got it to remember the connection - for now - but await further weirdness.
