The sim reader in my z30 is damaged. Is there any place that will repair it? I'm in Texas and no place local can do it

I am not sure where you can repair it. I have a question though. I am looking at getting a Z30 to replace my Z10. How did your sim card reader break? I've read others with the same issues. Is it a faulty design?

Did you put a "cut down " card in the reader, because I've read that this can cause damage to the mechanism.

I don't think it is a faulty design. I made the mistake of using a sim adapter

    Can you de-solder it?

Should be doable. Very fiddly affair though. And haven't checked where to get the replacement from...

Is it still under warranty? BlackBerry might repair it (probably charge you though).

I found replacement Z30 SIM readers on eBay. They are from China and will take two or three weeks to arrive. I found a shop in Windsor Ontario that will do the repair if I supply the part. They regularly do Q10 and Z10 SIM reader replacements and have a video on youtube showing how it is done.

When I get on my PC tomorrow, I will post links to the repair video. The repair is done with a specialised heat gun, rather than a soldering iron. I assume the replacement is pre-tinned and you just need to position the new reader, heat it up with the heat gun until it solders to the board.

I did the same thing with my Q10. Took it to a local repair shop. They could fix it for $75.00, but wouldn't guarantee it would work again. Now it's a wi-fi device

I can repair it for you if I can locate the sim card reader. if you want to message me back about it but you would need to ship it to me and I live in Pennsylvania and I can return it to you. ill let you know in a couple days if I can get it for your z30 and we can work out the details if you want it fixed by me.

Here is the shop that said they can replace my SIM reader if I supply the part. I purchased the reader on ebay, item number 310970802611. I just got a note from the eBay seller that he shipped the reader, but expect the mail to be slow from China, taking 20-40 days.

I bought the Z30 knowing the reader was broken with the intention to just use it as a mini tablet and GPS in the car. If I get the SIM reader fixed, it is just a bonus. I looked a the reader in my Z30 and the photo of the one listed on eBay is identical to the one in my Z30.

Note there is also a shop in the UK that will replace the SIM readers, which may be quicker than ordering a reader from China to be installed locally. The cost is about 50 pounds.

Don't try to solder cell phone components yourself with a soldering gun (unless you are experienced in this). The solder therein requires very high temperatures and the pads are so fragile and tiny that you could break them. I almost ruined an old phone trying to replace the clock's supercapacitor/battery. Fortunately it still works but can't keep the internal clock when the battery is removed.
