I think it has to do with the radio frequencies the phone works on

Just out of curiosity, why doesn't blackberry release a single model quad band GSM phone instead of all these nation specific models?

Passport seems to fit that bill.

Well, yes, but then they went and added that screen shrinking physical keyboard. Not really an adequate device for z30/z10 fans...

Perhaps, although their next full touch flagship should have the same band setup (why throw it away?).

I'm not 100% on this, but I think it has something to do with the frequencies at which the different bands are on and how those frequencies work with the physical antennae in the device. I'm kinda fuzzy on it, but there's something about different antenna lengths providing better reception at different frequencies. As far as I know, the chips can be setup to run on any band but without an optimized antenna the reception and power consumption would not be acceptable to end users.

I believe that the company Paratek that BB acquired was deep into research to eliminate this technical hurdle, and we got an iteration of it in the Z30 (which has way better reception than my Z10 did). If the Passport is really going to support all bands as rumored, then I would guess there is an newer revision of the Paratek antenna included.

Of course, like anything I say, this could all be 100% wrong lol

Why add additional complexities to a device that's already one of the most complex devices there ever was?

And why confuse the general public with anything more that "this phone only will work in the U-S (or wherever...)." This has been the case for CDMA (Verizon/Sprint/Bell....and Telus?) phones since the beginning of time.
