Is it normal for a z30 to shut down at 8% battery life and not go down to 0%

I'm going to say no, simply because my Z30 never does that.

Does it do it regularly or was this a one time thing? Maybe something you were doing or an app made a sudden demand on power that took it down without you noticing it.

I generally try to keep mine charged and catch it at about 20% but have missed a warning once or twice and it has powered off but I don't know the precise percentage when it happened.

I've had it below 10% a few times. Never shuts down.

Not sure at what percentage its supposed to shut off. That doesn't sound normal. Maybe the battery is going bad?

On my old z10 I had it to 0% a few times and it will run for 5-10min before it would turn off.

My Z30 would only shut down on 2% or below depending on what I'm running in the background. If it's purely on standby and nothing else is running but the screen, on a couple of instances, mine shut down at 1%. I would say that it's not normal for it to shut down at 8%.

Just letting you know you're not the only one to experience it. My Q10 would often turn off as high as 13%.

    Never did figure out why.

I used to get this on my old 9360. It got worse and replacing the battery fixed it

The battery is going bad. The best fix is to replace it. However, you can attempt to "calibrate" it by charging it fully to 100% then leaving it off the charger until it gets down to 0% (or as low as it will go). This is an iPhone solution to a BlackBerry problem, I admit, but it usually works to give you a better estimate of how much battery you have left.

However, you should go ahead and get the battery replaced.

It sounds like the battery meter is miscalibrated. On devices with removable batteries, it's relatively easy to reset by just taking the battery out for about an hour when it dies prematurely, then putting it back in and charging it from zero to full using the original charger that came with the device.

In the case of a Z30 or other device with a non-removable battery. You can probably open the phone and disconnect the battery if you have the right tools or try to leave the device off for a few hours, maybe overnight when it shuts off or maybe repeatedly try to turn it on to completely drain the battery, before attempting to charge it using the original charger. Avoid cheap, weak or low quality chargers and stick with the original chargers.

I've had it literally run for an hour at 0% if I'm not using it, but have never had it die before reaching that point.

My Z30 goes off at 5% every time. I had always thought that it's Normal. Not sure I can do anything about it since it's non removable Battery.

I'd be interested to know what OS you're on.

I got that too out of the box 7 months ago. But after the black screen fiasco, I've noticed for the last 2 updates, .440 and .1587(?), my device powers off at 4%. I think that's a new, generous failsafe.
(I do a monthly drain; that's not the focus here though.)

To the OP: 8% could be either hardware or software, so perhaps run the BBVE tool?

Hey, check out the details below. I haven't gotten to 10.3.2 yet so maybe I'll notice something similar once I am.

OK; that explains it then. On .1.15xx I was getting that ~45" on "0%". I believe it all changed on the .2.x upgrade due to the black screen issue, which I never had.

Usually OS updates bring so many underlying security fixes to any OS, but if you feel secure in staying with the .1584, I would. I think it was one of the best, least flawed versions in my short history with this device.

Hmm, this is kind of like when the BBOS phones would say battery to low for radio use. Man I hated getting that message. I would stay, but for some reason I'm getting frequent freezing in this os version. Might have to consider sitting tight however.
