Has anyone heard anything about Virgin US Updating it's service to include unlocked blackberry phones (like Z30) for use with their prepaid SIM in February? Customer service at virgin recently encouraged me to wait before switching companies (I'm switching from IPhone 5 to z30) because they think my phone might be compatible after that date.

Virgin US? Isn't that 100% Sprint? I'm not sure how a Z30 would work on that network unless you have a STA100-4

Verizon CDMA version is STA100-3. Likely what OP would need. Still questionable if compatible.

I called twice and talked to two reps. Both used rather cryptic language, neither guaranteed my phone would work, but both strongly encouraged me to wait and see. I have a STA 100-5 So I'm not sure how this could work. Switching from IPhone 5 on a very good Virgin plan.

That's the Verizon version, right. It won't work on Sprint though.

An STA100-5 will definitely not work on a CDMA carrier. No CDMA bands in this model.

Not now, but they are indicating that by Feb 15, they are going be open to unlocked phones or phones from other carriers, maybe similar to the way they offer to unlock the iPhone for free (which is gsm) for use on their network (this is how I use my iPhone 5 with virgin's $35 monthly plan.

Users here are trying to tell you. The carrier would have to change their network and/or bands in order for that handset to work. "Unlocking" has nothing to do with it. If a phone doesn't support a particular network, unlocking won't fix it.

Unless Virgin USA is changing their business model to resell both GSM and CDMA service like Straight Talk, it is Sprint frequency CDMA phones only.
