My Z30 is Swell....ing >.<

STA100-3 Verizon Z30 RFX101LW Made in Mexico 6.

Over the past week I have noticed my Z30 wont sit flat anyone, it has developed an approximate 1.5mm bulge in the area between the volume rockers and SD slot, about the size of a half dollar coin. I removed the rear cover, and yeah, its bulging from the inside.
I can spin it like a top on a flat table

I primary charge this on QI chargers, I use TYLT, and pretty much been doing this from day one.
I haven't had any issues with function or charge life, but I suspect the battery package is deforming due to "something".
I've had this baby for a few years now, I guess it may be due to get the battery replaced.
I'm savy enough to do the work, but have one question I don't find a "for sure" answer on.....

Is the battery in the STA100-3 the same as the other Z30 models?

I don't recommend using non BlackBerry chargers on a regular basis, as they have been known to cause battery damage. I would suspect this is your issue.

You might want to change the title to "What Replacement Battery for the STA100-3"

Right now it looks like you just like you Z30.

Sounds like the lithium battery is damaged. Only a matter of time before it puffs the magic smoke and takes out the phone.

Thanks F2 and non-vtec, I'm well aware of the magical metal lithium and how it loves to burn, many of days in the lab trying not to kill myself in my younger day

Do you or the other regulars know if the battery in the Verizon STA100-3 model is or isn't the same as the other Z30 models?

I just want to be sure before getting a replacement in route, so I'll be ready to do surgery with the right parts on hand

The battery is the same, it's the mid-frame that's different on the STA100-3. So if you order a battery that's already attached to mid-frame make sure it's for the 100-3.

Battery arrived and surgery was a success

Here is the old battery as I just got it pulled out, you can see the QI antenna peaking out from under the black backing material on it in the device housing.


Here is the old battery, foreground, and new battery, background. Note the bubbled and poofed up housing on the old battery.


Took about 20 minutes, not included stopping to take photos of the process and sending to my BBM friends on the spare BlackBerry.
My Z30 is now up and running, just letting all the apps and BBM catch back up.

I found a dealer in China, they sell on Amazon under the name Shine-Ebuy.
The new battery was labeled Blackberry and had the exact same housing, printing, connector, and specs as the OE one in my Z30.
It might be a China clone, but it does look 100% OEM and I had no issues with installing it or it's functionality, so far.

Crazy coincidence on an unrelated device: I have a Verizon MiFi hotspot in the work truck, and noticed the other day that it had bulged enough to pop the back cover off! Battery was nice and fat. Fortunately, removable, so I swapped it with another.

Thanks for posting your battery swap experience with your Z30. Hope I won't have to do it anytime soon!

Just wanted to follow up to see how the Chinese battery was holding out. I'm thinking I may need to replace the batteries in my wife and my Z30s. After two years, the battery life is definitely diminished.
