I am looking for a new Cell Phone Carrier...... I came across this

The two different technologies are called GSM (used by Fido) and CDMA (used by Koodo). These standards are generally known as "2G" technologies and are only used for voice and text these days, even then usually only when for when 3G signals are poor. Even so, if you want the best possible experience it's better to use the kind of network for which your phone was designed.

Try looking up your phone model online to see if it's compatible with GSM or CDMA. Some do both, but this is pretty rare.

Where does the Z30 fit in all this ?

The Verizon Z30, to clarify, does both cdma and gsm. In the US if used with Verizon it will be cdma. I guess some folks have put gsm sim cards in it and used on other carriers in the US. When I was in Europe in June my Verizon Z30 used gsm networks with the simcard Verizon provided (more pricy). But if I had wanted I would have acquired a local sim card while there and used that for phone/data. I will admit I'm not up on the various speeds/protocols (lte, 2g and 3g). When I've been up to Canada, frankly, I don't know what my Verizon Z30 has used but it worked!

Oh, one other thing that might interest you - the Verizon Z30 is the only model which supports Wireless/Qi charging. But you will have to ascertain how useful a Verizon model would be in Canada as a daily use device.

To add, not only consider GSM or CDMA, but at what frequencies and bands the carrier operates on.
See the sticky that describes which models support what frequencies here:

    Koodo uses CDMA?

Thought the CDMA networks up here were going to the ash heap of history where they belong.

Running my z30 on koodo network with no problems.

Nope Koodoo doesn't use CDMA anymore.... maybe a few legacy BlackBerry or dumb phones. They are actually phasing out the CDMA network within the next few years.

Fido uses GSM, it's the same network as Rogers. So you get very good coverage. In Canada, you need the Z30STA100-5. It would work with almost all carriers.

They don't share all... just the HSPA+ network. Their LTE aren't shared
