- I've posted about this already and must reiterate. I wish to appeal to BlackBerry to acknowledge a valid complaint from various BB10 device users who suffer from a screen brightness problem. I have upgraded from the Z10 to a beautiful Z30. At maximum brightness my phone looks no brighter than this.
What bothers me the most about this is that with conflicting reports, there seems to be a possible hardware fault with the ambient light sensor. There are damaging reviews of this device that label the screen as "lacking" in comparison, albeit at a lower resolution than competition.
When users run the auto brightness android app found in the BlackBerry App World and set this manually to maximum brightness; all android apps run at this new level, which overrides the OS software handling the screen and the sensor. The screen literally bursts into life. Filled with light and bursting rich in colour. It's amazing to see. This indicates there is nothing wrong with the screen itself and that everything is related to inconsistencies in the ambient light sensor in each device. We must be allowed to disable this in problem devices.
I truly wish BlackBerry to acknowledge this complaint and take this information on board and act upon it.
This phone is truly fantastic when seen this way. Give us the choice to disable the sensor. Thank you.

- Sure in a dark room the brightness is too much, but try reading something in daylight in dubai, my z10 was better than my current z30. Also, with the larger battery I don't care if it drains faster. Having the option would be nice to make it brighter. They should just use that warning that pops up they have with the headphone volume ( which Is annoying as well).
Z30 Pooooooooower!!!05-04-14 10:30 PMLike 0 - I actually returned my first Z30 because of that... the vendor said it is normal since Z30 has amoled screen... I don't buy his reason... since they don't want to replace it with another device reasoning that it is normal (and not a defect), I returned the unit and get my refund... and stick with my Z10...
Posted via CB1005-04-14 11:30 PMLike 0 - I like my Z30 just the way it is. I leave the brightness all the way down as is. That much brightness is not needed in darkness. I know it is to each their own, but that's a bit ridiculous.
Posted via CB1005-04-14 11:45 PMLike 0 - Z10 is LCD. So the Z30 is AMOLED.
I know looking at a Z10 and a Q10 side by side in the Verizon store the other day, the Q10 AMOLED screen was no where near as bright or vibrant.
One reason I prefer LCD screens though I know they eat more battery, have less contrast, and a more limited viewing angle.ultra07 likes this.05-05-14 12:53 AMLike 1 - Z10 is LCD. So the Z30 is AMOLED.

But the key point here that I made was that some of the units have defective Ambient Light Sensors. My phone always thinks I'm in a Dimly lit environment, so it won't even attempt to properly brighten the screen. What other people may also be failing to appreciate is that if they're happy with their unit, that they may indeed have one of the working ones. My Z10 is brighter than my Z30, clearly, but it is still duller than my PlayBook. I took that picture using the PlayBook camera with the light on, yet it strangely looks dark in the room.
Anyway, when I run the Virtual Expert it says I fail on light and bright tests - possible hardware faults. I only pass on light when I actually hold it relatively close to a room light. I only pass on bright if I stick an LED torch against the actual sensor, and even then the brightness is barely any different.
To be fair. I am not complaining for the sake of it. I paid 320 for this phone and when some people have working units that they consider too bright, without keys that rattle (which I fixed using a simple strip of clear tape), it clearly indicates a lack of consistency in production. Some Z10's and Q10's have the same issue. My first Z10 had a dull screen with yellow whites. I'm trying to point out a possible fault with the sensors and appealing for a mere software feature that allows us to disable the sensor. When reviews also damage the appeal of BlackBerry when staying the screens are too dim, it's worrying and tragic. I only say this because the android app clearly shows it isn't a screen fault.
The Z30 screen when using Android apps along with the brightness override app shows the Z30 has the best BlackBerry screen to date, and even stands up to the "superior" displays on competing phones.
Anyway. Here's hoping this comes about. As for those happy with their device, please accept this appeal is not about being fussy, but rather this is about having a potentially faulty device, which others may have too. BlackBerry allowing reviews to wrongly state their screens pretty much suck next to Iphones and Androids is also unfair when this screen can look tremendous when not gimped by a dodgy sensor.

This has a series of hardware test, one of which is the light sensor

Z30 Pooooooooower!!!
The Z10 was normally too bright for me - even painful in a dark room. I ran the Z10 at 0% - 25%, most of the time. I generally run my Z30 at 0% - 50%.
I can see that the option would be nice, but I like it the way it is.
Posted via CB1005-05-14 07:45 AMLike 0 - But there's some key points being ignored here. Those happy with their device may only be happy because they have a solid and fault free device. Why else do some people's bb10 device sport great brightness that they opt to turn down with flawless whites and yet other users have dim grey screens with yellow whites?
I'm emphasising a possible ambient sensor fault across the BlackBerry 10 devices that may be using the same hardware. There could be production faults, so for those who land an unlucky device, the ability to switch this thing off and manually set their brightness to their own liking would be much appreciated.
The Z30 is the current flagship. It sports a fantastic screen when using Android apps with the auto brightness app. Native apps and general usage on the other hand can be lacking vibrancy and adequate brightness even at maximum setting in those devices that suffer from this problem.
Remember, this isn't a fussy request, but more regarding why some devices are fine and others are not. And to think some reviews state the screen is fantastic and yet others say it's horribly dim and lacking for an AMOLED display - which is unfair but makes sense if they have this problem with their review device.
I just wish the best for us and for BlackBerry.
