I'm getting the "camera can't be started" error message. It was working fine a day or so ago. I've tried a hard reboot- no joy.

    Any ideas?

what have you installed or changed on your device since then?

do you use android apps that need camera permissions? Sometimes due to the nature of the RT, it can be constantly pinging the camera, therefore the main camera app can't open the viewfinder

Nothing new at all. I'm not a big app user, haven't actually loaded anything new from BB word since upgrading from the Z10.

Is there any way I can find out what's using the camera?

You can open Device Monitor and see what is using the Battery. Examine the apps and see if any of them might use the Camera. You can close apps by tapping on them. It might not be obvious but for example, BB World can use the camera when it is used to SCAN bar codes. So look over the various app.

I have seen this very same problem on a Q5 I had bought for my son. After messing around for days loading various versions of autoload leaks where nothing worked of course, I decided to pop it open and disconnect the battery. After reassemble , everything has been fine ever since.

So it started right after the update?

I think there was an OS 10.3 update that loaded automatically. Can I rollback and unload it? (has .1784 installed. Worked fine with .1865)

Checked all apps only thing I can find is skype- have that switched off from running in the background.

Can't pop the battery in the Z30 (or the Q5) but tried a restart after switching off skype just to be sure. Still stumped.

You have to open the unit by removing the back cover then the #5 torx screws. I think there's 10 of them so nothing hard about this procedure. There's a link or two on here showing exactly how to take apart a Z30. All you need to do is lift the screen to access the battery connection.. no need to disconnect the screen. Just disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes and put it all back together.

You might even UNinstall Skype and see if that helps. Also, maybe try from the back door - open Picture App, open the Camera folder and tap the Camera Icon at the bottom. In the past, some folks have found they can get to the camera using other methods. Do they other camera modes work? Front facing or video?

    Good luck.

Deleted skype and a couple of other apps... Hard restart.... still no joy, and no joy starting the camera through another app- tried pictures folder or Facebook. Can't get any "control " over the camera as the app won't start - can't switch cameras etc.

Starting to scratch head with this one!

Not gonna fix until you listen and disconnect the battery for a while. If it's too hard for you, just take it to a repair shop. Takes 5 minutes max!!!

It isn't that difficult to disconnect the battery. There is a video I used to replace my screen and it even shows where the battery connection is and you just flip the tab up and take the ribbon off. Let it sit a bit, put the ribbon back in and flip the tab back down. But I can see why someone wouldn't want to try.

I'm leery of the battery option because it's not my phone (it's a work one- the Q5 is my own) and it's like 2 weeks old.

I'll have a chat with a help desk tech tomorrow, if he approves we'll go for it.

Thanks for all the ideas so far!

Oh, I don't know how difficult the Q5 might be, since this is in the Z30 section I assumed you were talking about one of those.

Try this first before opening phone to disconnect battery.. theoretically it should results to the same. Speaking about allowing the battery to drain to zero.

The problem is on the Z30 (my work phone). I will try the drain the battery suggestion though that will realistically have to wait 'til the weekend. I'll also try the service desk in the interim, they might be able to do something from warranty.

From the Q5 thread I did try popping the media card out then doing a hard restart again to see if that helped- no change.

Media card method didn't work for me on Q5. Those phones had quite a few reported with this problem too. If you can get warranty repairs or replacement on the phone I'd suggest you go that route but if not, do battery drain and if that don't work then disconnect the battery lead.

Drained the battery and still nothing. Will check helpdesk- might be a new phone. Hope they still have Z30s in stock...

And full system reset, no change, so getting it swapped under warranty.
