Just been speaking to the manager of o2 store in Wallsend shopping centre and asked if they were supplying future BlackBerry devices he said they were not getting the z30 in but they will be getting the z5 in. I asked what is the z5 he said it's a low cost full touch screen that BlackBerry will be releasing soon. Interesting

I'm NOT disagreeing with you, I just don't get it. The Z10 FREE so what exactly is a low cost touch screen gonna do? Can't get much lower than FREE.

The Z10 is only free with a carrier contract. Some countries don't have carrier subsidy contracts so customers have to pay the full price of the phone. Jakarta is a low cost full priced solution made for these countries.

In lebanon we do not have carrier-contracted phones and a Z10 costs around 250$ while the Q5 costs around 320$ (?) the Q10 is now around 520$. So a low-cost phone should be around 150-200$

Jakarta has been known about for months.

What I find strange is that it's being shown this month at MWC but there haven't been any leaked photos of what it looks like. All the previous models were known about in terms of looks for months before they launched.

Makes me think we will be seeing a mockup at MWC and the real thing is still months away.

Since there's a huge overstock of Z10's, why would let they just sell those off cheap and get blackberry into the hands of the population. And it's cheaper than their advertising campaigns that suck

Chen said it'll be out early this year. Remember, this is now made by Foxconn so some of the previous channels where leaks came through might not exist anymore. That being said, we've already seen accessories and cases made for it. (there was a thread on it) . And we've seen leaked images of the Z5 or what seemed to be a low cost full touch.
I for one am not thrilled since I'm looking for an upgrade, not downgrade.

I would imagine it's because as soon as you change the value of your inventory, you change the value of your company.
BlackBerry already wrote down the Z10 a long time ago, changing the value of their inventory. You can buy it pre-pay in the UK for 150 UK pounds. That's a reduction in price of well over half compared to 12 months ago and only 50 UK pounds off the cheapest entry level Android and Windows Phone phones.

It makes no sense to have millions upon millions of Z10s in inventory but not sell them off for whatever BlackBerry can get for them. They are worth more for the BlackBerry ecosystem in user's hands than sitting in warehouses losing value and bringing in no revenue stream.

Hopefully what's happened is there aren't enough Z10s of the right model left to meet the demand for a Jakarta device in Asia. Then finally maybe BlackBerry has got a grip on its supply and demand calculations, which under Thorsten were frighteningly optimistic.

If that's true I really hope Z10 stocks and inventory are about to run out because that leaves the Z10 as unsellable unless the Z5 has yet another the screen resolution (lower) and has shocking battery life! Lol

I was hoping it would have a 4.7 inch screen in the size of the Z10. The Z30 is a good phone, but the 5 inch screen is right at the edge of being too big for me. I would prefer a smaller phone that is just a little bigger than the Z10 or the same size as the Z10 but bigger screen and less bezel.

The problem you have is that the market other than for iphones is towards the larger sizes with various companies releasing larger devices with cutdown specs such as less memory, slower cpus and lower rez displays as even the people who don't want to buy the flagships want larger devices these days.

One thing to bear in mind, they specifically mentioned Indonesia as being first for this device, there is no certainty that it will ever be sold by o2 and given the lack of leaks it seems quite likely that it is going to a lot less carriers than other devices as the leaks tended to become a lot more frequent after the devices going to all the carriers for testing in the past.

I don't think we will see any leaks before release, unless someone doesn't mind loosing their job and a possible lawsuit due to breaking a non confidential agreement. I don't believe this is the Jakarta.

Yes... because leaks have never occurred before, even for Apple who pay employees loads to keep their mouth shut.. guess we'll find out in a week or two
