Default Z10 WORST Keyboard Ever.....if you turn on the Accessibility Settings

...if you turn on the Accessibility Settings. This is little story of don't mess around with something and then forget what you did.

After receiving my gorgeous Z10 at the London launch I loved the keyboard, the device and everything new about BlackBerry 10. I was one smug *h**. I was whacking out tweets, emails and Facebook posts like no tomorrow on the new keyboard and then, to my surprise, things went a little pear-shaped. - My keyboard started to stick.

When I started to type the auto-text wasn't anywhere near as good as it had been. If I wanted to delete a word; the delete button would stick and auto-delete the whole email/post/tweet - That was SO frustrating. Anyway I went on throughout the week just battling through, pulling the battery and wallowing in my self-pity as my beloved Z10 was really letting me down. Infact the who device had become sluggish and horrible to use. I even tried not to tweet from the device as it was such a task.

I searched forums for people having the same problem, but everyone was still raving about their Z10. It got to the point last night that I rang the missus to give me the number on the card that was given to us for all service enquiries for the device, given to us at launch. As I supped a pint, looking lovingly but disappointed at my Z10; it occurred to me.

For some random reason about a week ago, when drilling down into the settings I switched on Accessibility which provided magnification through gestures for users with eye sight issues etc. (I still have no idea why I left this on, or even swithced it on. I was just playing) - After switching this off my Z10 returned to normal and I have falling in love with it all over again.

So two things to highlight with this post:

    1. If your device does the same, check you haven't switched this setting on by mistake.
    2. The Z10 becomes really hard to use with this setting enabled. Not sure I was using the gestures correctly, but the actual device was so hard to use eve without visual impairment. Could have this user experience been implemented better?

Anyway's had to share. As I am now giddy with joy that my Z10 is finally back to it's normal awesome self!

The thread headline and content don't seem to match with each other. It seems you're going to complain about the keyboard, but you're actually loving it and giving a tip to people who have problems with their keyboards. Maybe you should ask a mod to change the title into something realistic.

I think addressing the problem and coming up with a solutions is legit, but it should be clear what the thread is saying and it just doesn't match. I had to learn the hard way myself. On another note, maybe the OP should have addressed this issue in existing threads about keyboard issue to be even more effective.

I found this issue too when I had enabled magnification. Seemed to stick on the letter A

Default Magnify Mode Induces Keyboard Bugs

I agree. This is a BUG.

Switched on the Magnify Mode accessibility option last evening. Since then, keyboard keys are slow to respond - plus they randomly stick and capitalize. Most amusing/annoying: The backspace key now randomly sticks and erases everything!

Turned off Magnify Mode, and my Z10 keyboard is working fine once again.

Try it. I'd be interested if anyone doesn't have this issue.

Too bad. Magnify Mode s generally a good feature. I hope BBRY looks into this one.

Thanks for finding the solution. I had raised this same keyboard issue (e.g. all outside perimeter keys being hyper-sensitive, A, Q, P, L, DEL or BackSpace, the comma key and spacebar) in the helpblog.blackberry forum over a period of a couple of days. I was told to contact my wireless provider to have them contact BBRY. The rep I spoke to, upon seeing what I was experiencing, offered to replace my Z10, which they did. At the store, the new Z10 worked like a charm. I brought it home and reinstalled/restored everything that I had deleted from my older unit. As part of my setting up of the new Z10, I again activated the Magnification. I do this so as to be able to read the fine print in some Web-sites. Of course, unknown to me until I read your story and solution, I continued to experience the same keyboard issues that I had with my 1st Z10. At this point I was somewhat frustrated and didn't know where to turn, so I thought why not check the Crackberry forum and low and behold I found your solution to the problem. For this I want to say thank you for posting your comments and more importantly finding the SOLUTION to this horrible problem. Thanks to you, my Z10 now works like a charm. Thank you Crackberry forum and to you Ben.

Wish I had known this as I sent mine back and is still comforting my old 9860!

I got so frustrated with the keyboard disappearing and constantly deleting what I had managed to write it made the whole point of the Z10 pointless and nothing more than a brick to throw at any would be mugger!!

After reading this I am tempted to call back to Orange, but I am going to stick it out a little longer to see if they fix some of the bugs... think us Brits are the test bearers!!

How is it anyone's fault but your own for changing settings? It's not a bug, it's user error.

I'm not sure it actually works as intended. The settings are there for people with Visual Impairment. Even if I did have an eyesight problem, it would render my keyboard almost useless.

seriously???? a person enables a feature and the keyboard acts up??? how the heck is than not a bug. That feature is not working like it should. What a silly reply. I wish people would be a little more impartial here.

I think it IS a bug. I turned on magnifying glass because I was used to it on my iPhone, Torch, and Samsung Galaxy S3 and wondered why my Z10 didn't have that feature and found that it did. It's VERY useful for people with older eyes like myself (like zoom on my old Torch). I didn't realize the cause and effect - I searched the forums to see if I could figure out why when I backspaced it would delete everything I had typed, not just the last letter. After I saw this post I disabled magnifying glass and the keyboard is fine again. I suppose I can enable it whenever I need it and disable it when I need to type, but IMHO I shouldn't have to.
Hopefully a software update will fix it.

I turned it on yesterday to test for a friend with visual issues. Couldn't scroll down the settings page far enough to turn it off. Nearly freaked out. Still not sure how I got rid of it.

Sounds like your slightly zoomed in. Try pinching the screen and trying the Setting again to disable Magnification mode.

    You're probably right Ben.

I do believe these settings should be kept as straight forward as possible if anyone with visual issues is expected to use them. Perhaps when BB10 comes to the Playbook with it's bigger screen we'll revisit this, as so far all other tablets/phones we've tried are no better.

You, sir, are an absolute star! I was about to return my Z10 as this issue was driving me to distraction, but, just like that, it's fixed!!

    I owe you a pint!

Hi Everyone. Good time to try the new Z10 OS update 10.0.10.85

Settings > Accessibility > Magnify Mode now appears to be working much better. I have had it on for about 24 hours and have no keyboard issues.

Does the new update work for you?
