Default Z10 newbie - using too much data. Help!

Hi there, I'm a newbie to the Z10 and the smartphone world (late-bloomer). I bought a Z10 Saturday, Feb. 16 with a 500mb plan. It's Wednesday, Feb. 20 and have already used 124MB of data! Clearly, something is 'on' that shouldn't be on and is eating into my data plan. The only things I have set up are my personal email account, facebook and linkedin - all of which have had very little activity over the last four days.
I haven't downloaded anything, watched youtube, movies, listened to music or anything like that. I checked out Facebook photo albums and had a 15 minute facebook chat yesterday. I haven't browsed anything on the internet. I text messaged and used BBM with one other BBM user.

I checked with sales staff at the Source today and they suggested that I turn off the location services function which has been on since I bought the Z10. I have also switched off 'data services' (which disables BBM and internet connections) in the meantime but left 'mobile network' on so that I can actually use the phone to call and text people. I haven't had a chance to try a wi-fi network yet. I will check my data usage tomorrow if there has been any difference and will then switch 'data services' back on and see what happens. I am hoping that it was the location services function that is the culprit. Any other suggestions from forumers would be welcome. Thanks in advance!

Use wifi as much as possible that would be my suggestion. Remember, with a new phone you are always playing with it so usage might go down.

I think that's just it - you haven't been on wifi at all! That's the big money saver!

Usually what eats up the data is LTE, if you're browsing with that on your data will finish in a snap, also go on your carrier's website and find out what you have used that has taken that much of your data.

The Z10 is not like older BB's where everything goes through BIS, and LTE data will suck the life out of your monthly data usage. I have a 6gb data plan, and had the Z10 for 2 weeks+ and I've gone through 4.23gb of data... and I still have a week and a bit left.

Thanks - I will try your suggestions about Wi-Fi and LTE. My carrier wasn't much help when I chatted with them online - 'for privacy issues' they couldn't divulge what specifically I was using. The only thing I can check on my carrier's website (Bell) is a total data usage for the day. I will call them directly to see if they can help. And yes, as a newbie I'm sure I was probably playing with the phone too much.

I notice that the browser seems to always be 'on' in the background when you tap on the browser icon. There are several tabs open that I can't seem to close individually - four tabs or windows on Bell's 'self serve' pages, a google page and a sympatico page. If I swipe from down to up, it minimizes the page of six windows and I click on the close function and it closes, but when I tap on the browser again, all six of these pages pop up. I have tried closing them individually with no luck - they just keep coming back.

I have location services on for almost everything and I can say that it isn't making any differences in my data.
It's killing my battery more than anything.

I'm assuming you don't have wifi at home or you just didn't mention it in your post.

Personally I can't see 500 megs being enough for anything nowadays.

If you can, I would suggest keeping an eye out for free wifi hotspots and save the connection for quick access.

The Z10 is built for playing so if you can, bump that data plan up and seek out free hotspots.

So we understand what you mean, are you looking at the large 'pages' in the browser or the small box in the lower left of the browser?

The large icons are your history pages.
The lower left is your tabs. If you don't see a number in there, then you have no tabs open.

The history dies not keep an active connection open so this is not a drain on your data.

Since Feb 5, I have used up 780Mb of Data, I'm on Wifi every evening and weekend when I'm home, but I did occasionally open Youtube video while on the road.
Good thing I managed to get a 6 Gb data.
FYI back when I was on OS 7.1, highest Data I used in a month was 300+ Mb

How often are your social media apps updating? That could also be an issue. The LTE as stated above is one factor as well, on my 9810 I only have a 200mb plan on ATT, I use WiFi so much that I hardly ever go over 75-100mb, and I am always on my phone.

If your on bell and want to check your usage without going on the website send a blank text msg to 82273 than it will msg you back than press the letter B for usage and it will give you your usage with a 2 hour delay

Also the first sync with your Accounts and contacts would eat up data if you didn't do that on a wifi connection

LOL I was going to say that I'm bridged with my 9850 probably 5 hours 5 days a week surfing CB, IMing, email, some BBM groups and just surfing and I use about 2gb a month.

How does that compare with your previous BB? I ask because I use about 5-6gb now with my 9900. Mostly streaming. Wondering if you have seen a big increase after switching.

Thanks GH - you are correct, I don't have wi-fi at home yet; i've got the modem, just need to set up the wireless (on my to do list). I was hoping not go above 500mb based on my limited use. If this turns out to be a real data hog, I may just drop the data plan and seek out wi-fi when on the go.

Thanks for the tip about LTE, I will try switching that off to see if it helps. I have turned off notifications for facebook, linkedin and email (I know i read it somewhere that that should help cut down data use a little). how do i check for how frequent the social media apps update?

Welcome to the world of LTE. It is based consumer use...it stands for "L-et T-hem E-at" data.

"I checked out Facebook photo albums"

That's your culprit right there, each photo will be 1mb or more, depends how they were uploaded. You basically download the photos to view them.
