Why my Z10 STL100-1 captures photos not more than 1.8 Mb as compared to other devices such of android and apple which captures b/w 1.5 to 3.5 Mb 8 MP shooters...I have a 4 S which captures of size 3 Mb.....
    Is my camera faulty

Compression algorithms could be a factor. Larger file size does not mean better quality however lower image size means more efficiency when it comes to data used for transfer of such files.

If you compare shots from another 8MPX camera and zoom on them, they don't look as blurry or grainy, just saying.

My images range anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 mb and depends on what the subject is and how much detail and color variation there is in the field of view. This is at full res 3264x2448. BlackBerry probably uses a medium-low compression rate - not the highest quality, but a little better than medium.

Be sure you are fully zoomed out. Zooming in only crops the image, reducing the actual final resolution (and relative file size).

Older BlackBerry phones used to have a quality setting that I wish it still had - but then, the actual resolution was much lower then. While the quality now is not too bad visually, it could be better, and a much lower compression option (higher quality) would be nice.

I don't recall the megapixel values for the z10 camera but I don't know why bb compresses the image. They should either allow choice or save in full (yup, storage will suffer) and allow folks to do their own post-processing.

First, dark pixels weigh less; that's why darker overall pictures weigh less.

Second, the size doesn't have to do anything with quality but mainly content (darker or lighter) and compression.

Third, Mega Pixel equals 1 million pixels. Meaning you can calculate how many pixels are in a picture by multiplying its area, example, 1980x1080 = ~2MP

Fun fact : BlackBerry 16:9 ratio pictures are 6MP compared to 4:3 ratio which are 8MP

It is so because z10 doesn't have a wide sensor... so it has to 'crop out' pixels in 16:9 mode.
There are phones who let you select 16:9 aspect ratio and are using the same technique.

Btw, i've got even 3mb photos with z10 (more light and details)

It is standard among all camera since all camera sensors is round and the pictures taken is all square. So no camera can fully utilise the sensors. There will always some redundant pixels in the corner

Of course 4:3 is better. This utilise more sensor pixels than the wide format .

I always prefer 16:9. They look better on a large TV or display (no black borders)

I prefer the 4:3 myself but will switch once in a while to 16:9. Depends on what I need. I will post pictures I took with Z10 that is 1.7MB and another that is 2.9MB. how do you like it? Both look good to me. Might be better if you saw the actual images but they are still good photos. Both taken on overcast days. Guess which is which? lol. Anyway the Z10 camera is not that bad if you play around with it. I tend not to use HDR unless it will help as it is different than what I have seen in other smartphone cameras. It forces HDR which is not always ideal. Only use it when there are very bright and very dark or shaded areas within your frame. Also moving objects don't come out in HDR.
