Newb here. I received a z10 that was blacklisted by Bell Canada. Can I unlock this device and use it on ATT? I know they're compatible, stl 100-3. Also, can I use it on Verizon?

What do you mean by blacklisted? Did you buy it new from a reputable store ? Or secondhand and blocked as reported stolen?

nice, so somebody sold you stolen property , do the right thing. If you bought it through ebay get it all reversed.

Sucks for you but I hope there is no way for it be restored to usable and good for Bell.

It doesn't mean it was necessarily stolen. My nephew bought it in Canada, he lives there, and found out he can't use it up there. So me being in the States, want to see if I can use it here.

So it's not blacklisted and you know who you bought it from.

Funny how the word i d i o t got turned into ***** in my previous post. Seemed like the right word for somebody whole steals a broken phone

I think he's saying his nephew sold him a Bell branded. Phone that is blacklisted in Canada that he hopes he can use in the U S of A.

Not clear how the nephew ended up with a blacklisted phone but doesn't want anyone to think too hard about that part.

So CB Nation let's all work hard to help get this mysterious phone workin' for these folks .

And for your next project. What about that QNX thingy in cars. Any way we can get into that because I know a guy who can't get his car started. I think he lost his keys.... or something

Feel sorry for the person that got ripped off by the OP's nephew! If a phone is blacklisted, that means it's been reported lost but most likely stolen as if it was lost, it probably would haven been returned instead of being shipped off to another country

Phones can also be blacklisted by the carrier for non payment of an outstanding bill. I found this out the hard way by purchasing a phone for my son on Craigslist that was blacklisted by Verizon for non payment. Only options to correct it was for the previous owner to pay the bill or me to pay the outstanding balance. I learned an expensive lesson that you always check esn numbers prior to or at the time of purchase. Either that or buy used phones from somewhere like ebay where you have excellent buyer protection. Unfortunately there are carriers here in the US that will go ahead and allow you to use these "blacklisted" phones. Always check esn numbers or tell the seller you will meet them at the carriers store to make the purchase. That way you can make sure everything is legit.

Blacklisted generally means stolen. I've had to take police report numbers when calling in to blacklist a customers phone.

Show your nephew a good example. Don't use the by product of someone else's misfortune.

If the device is IMEI-blacklisted, you can never use it anywhere in the world.

Is does always not mean lost/stolen, it can also mean someone didn't pay their cell phone bill so the carrier blacklisted the IMEI on their network.

When you go to unlock it, you enter the IMEI and the the unlocking service will check and make sure the IMEI is good. If it checks out, you should be able to unlock it and use it on ATT. If the IMEI search comes back bad, you have a brick.

I would also check the device PIN with Blackberry to make sure the device wasn't reported stolen which would make the device useless with the Blackberry servers.

so if the true owner sold this phone to the OP's nephew. Then that owner could clear up any issue and get that phone working again... problem solved

sounds like a hard lesson for the "nephew"

If someone knows your IMEI provided to them for a possible transaction and they wanted it so they could check if it was clean or unlocked, can they then go and report it stolen or lost themselves?

They could but wouldn't really get them anywhere, it would be akin to reading the VIN number from a car and reporting it stolen.

I've given the IMEI out for phones that I was gonna sell on ebay and have had no problems in the past. Not saying what you are asking is impossible but I have never had a bad experience from giving the number out. Maybe someone else can share a different experience they had.....
