There is a thread on rfd stating employees can purchase the z10 for $99 off contract. Apparently this applies to friends and family only. I find that hard to believe. I'm asking a few friends but has anyone here heard this?

    Edit.

The deal is true. I've Got 2 z10's on the way. I will be giving them to my kids to use as ipod like devices.

Something I said they should have done with the Dev alpha devices.

Looks like someone is confirming the deal. Slightly different though.

Company discount is a long way from a fire sale. Might be more of a moral booster?

Last month, I would have agreed with you.
But not in blackberry's current climate.

    After another round of layoffs?
    Way to milk your employees.

    Q5 for emerging markets.
    Ok q5 for all
Fire hundreds of employees every month.

    Sales largely disappoint.
    Slash prices
    Declare company for sale
    Z10 99 bucks

Yeah given other things this appears to be a firesale to get units off the books but without having a public firesale...

I mean you could spin it but BES slashed, 100 layoffs and $99 devices all in 48 hours timeframe?

Does anyone know the limit of how many one can buy? If its open to as many as they want the retail market will collapse.

Wasn't the z10 modeled after the playbook?

Maybe, but the exact same thing happened before the public HP touchpad firesale. Employees were purchasing them for dirt for a few weeks prior.

If each employee is limited to 3 devices they won't even move 50,000 units. I fail to see how that could be an effective way of getting units off their books.

No bb10 for playbook -give this a rest, they said they would but admitted it couldn't work Guess no one ever couldn't come through on a commitment to you.
    Q5 for emerging markets. Check
Ok q5 for all they said they would release it and its primary.. primary not only market is emerging ones
Fire hundreds of employees every month. 2000 over a year ago, 200 two months ago and now 100 this month. Yep that sure is 100's of employees every month
Guidance for next q is down What do you mean guidance, does the board of BB need to hold your hand and tell you everything they are planning on doing for the next 4 months? Does any company? If they did I wish loblaw had told me they where going to buy Shoppers, I would have gotten stock ahead of time
Sales largely disappoint. No argument there, go ask the head of US advertising,. wait they fired him I wonder why...
Slash pricesProducts aren't selling at full price, reduce and get them out into hands of others that will drive word of mouth sales. HTC One is on price discount, Lumina 1020 is in the same boat. your point is?
Declare company for sale Be that way for 1 year apparently, just not made public. Did you not watch the keynote in January, Thor said they are looking at all possible plans in regards to BB
    Z10 99 bucks

At what point does even the most starry eyed supporter read the writing on the wall?So basically 8 months after launching a new platform and 5-6 new phones its already game over in your mind. Have you not read any business mags/books. It takes 5 years for a company (new) to make it or break it. First 2 years are losses, and if they can make it to the 3rd year they breakeven and the last 2 years are slow growth. So basically I'm saying it will be 1-2 years of negative to small growth.

The way it works is you pay $99 upfront and the difference is a taxable benefit. So depending on your tax bracket, it is really more like $99 + $150 in taxes. ~$250

Retail price higher than playbook. Now sale is below playbook fire sale. Not good. Not sure how thor said z10 sales are very encouraging and beat records. He might be indicted soon.

Actually, since employees have to claim the discounted price as a taxable benefit, the company gets to write off the difference so they're NOT just making the $99.
