Okay, probably a silly question. What is the practical difference between turning off the WIFI, and turning on Airplane Mode?

Airplane mode is just a shortcut to turn off/on all active radios (cell, wifi, bluetooth, etc.). You can still manually override each (or at least wifi as far as I have tried on a flight).

Turning off WiFi means that you'll be running on mobile data. Activating airplane mode turns off mobile data, WiFi, cellular. You would receive no calls, email, be unable to browse.

Okay, that makes sense. On my tablet, I thought that airplane mode only turned off the WiFi, but now I'm wondering if it doesn't turn off the Bluetooth, also.

    Thanks for the answers.

Of course, the idea is when you're on a flght, you can keep using your phone and when an attendant checks, you can show her the little airplane symbol. However, all they are really interested in on planes is that cell service is off. You can put your phone in a/p mode and then turn wifi back on for carriers that support wifi in flight. Those with WFC (t-mo usa) can then still text and make calls even with cell service off.

Airplane mode means no incoming or outgoing signal Wi-Fi or cellular. Wi-Fi off just turns off the network card for the phone. Not cellular service. You can have airplane mode on and then turn on the Wi-Fi.
