    • In order to work
    • Nothing.

The terms used are too broad. Realistically, the apps ask access to your data because they generally need to cache files and interact with other portions of the OS. You can disable if you wish, however chances are you'll also be back asking why such and such app isn't working when the answer will be 'you disallowed permissions'

It helps to know which apps they are as well... If you have an app like CB10 and you want to know why it needs access to files, its to be able to access pictures to post in the forums

Should be fine. But like anything in life, you use it at your own risk

    That's a good question.

Sometimes they need access to some data to work properly. Like:

    Weather app to your GPS
    or
Blackberry Travel to your HUB (Inbox) for autoscan on future travels.

But there are also so things I don't understand:
Why does WhatsApp want to read my E-mails and text messages - there is is no need for that. So I turned that off.

Whatsapp need sms access because it auto detects registration code sent via sms. After that turn it off. It doesnt need it anymore.

I personally will never use Whatsapp because of their insistence on having so much access to my personal information. I tried it once then deleted it. BBM works better. For the short time I couldn't use BBM, on some ships at sea I wasn't getting Blackberry services, I used a sideloaded version of Kik, it worked well. Thankfully my Z10 works perfectly on ships now so I'm back to BBM. Whatsapp is simply too intrusive.

Some apps are poorly coded and don't bother with any discrimination - they just ask for all permissions. Even permissions they might not need. Others, well, you have to decide if they are up to no good or just innocent.

Some permissions are required to allow functionality, even if it's just something as silly as auto-fill-in your email to get newsletter, updates or other notifications.

Some flashlight apps on Android allegedly are scams to

mine and exploit private data. Pretty disturbing. One reason I do not really trust "free" apps...
