Not a simple answer, I am afraid. It is not so simple as "download the APK from Google Play". You will need Google Play apk installed, which needs Google ID to run Play apps. But there is no BB Google ID app in BB World. However, fear not. Cobalt of CrackBerry fame has come to our rescue.

First, if you run a Classic, for example, upgrade your OS to latest (10.3.2.2876) and add Android runtime update (10.3.2.371) from BB World. Then follow Cobalt's recipe to add Google Play to your BB. Then download Whatsapp from Google Play and install. Open. Here it gets tricky.

When Whatsapp complains about Play Services, press BB Go Back button, not OK on the popup. Now, Whatsapp prompts to restore your messages. Only problem, the export database that the current "Export for Android" function in Whatsapp for BB creates, is not spotted by Whatsapp for Android. So, the issues:
    A) I have not managed to migrate my messages to Whatsapp for Android.
    B) The Contacts do not properly sync with my BB Contacts.
    C) the look-and-feel is not as polished as the BB edition.

See. As far as my experience with WhatsApp for android goes, I'm pretty sure the app is not dependent on Google Play Services (except the cloud backup??). So, the stock apk from the WhatsApp website shall work. But, remember to couple the Android WhatsApp with WAAFixer which irons out the bug that didn't allow media to be sent on android version of WhatsApp.

Wait. What about the issue of being stuck at the loading backups screen. I wasn't able to get past it when I tried. Any solutions?

Just use the BB10 version. Usually it will work until WhatsApp changes something significantly important. Until then, it will work, I suppose. When the time comes, just move on to DTEK if you really need WhatsApp.

Downside, you don't get/have HUB integration. I did it tonight just to get a feel for it. It's pretty much the same, accessing functions a little different, but nothing major.

I think I'll just wait until BB10 WhatsApp expires and cross the bridge when I get there.

No patching is necessary. Just download the latest apk and install it. Don't restore old backup and tick OFF the cloud backup. It'll be good to go.

It will send you a notification to the hub ye, but there's no integration. Clicking on the notification takes you to the app.

It's terrible! BlackBerry *****ed us with their OS. I will not longer trust this company... will definitely switch to another OS and manufacturer.

Okay. Here's the good news. WhatsApp has extended their support for BBOS and BB10 till June 2017.
    Rejoice, folks!
