    Hi everyone,

I've been using BlackBerry Link for a while but recently I got a new windows 8 laptop with usb 3.0. Every time I connect my Z10 to my laptop it crashes my computer, normally when I unplug it. Data transfers and everything is fine until I finish and unplug it, and then my laptop just crashes. Does this happen to anyone else? Any fixes?

Update: Windows 8.1 seems to have fixed this issue!

USB 3.0 incompatibility is a common issue. I don't think there's any other way around it than using a USB 2.0 port if possible (I tried a USB 2.0 hub plugged into a USB 3.0 port, but that didn't work).

Hopefully this is a driver issue, so BBRY can get around to fixing it...

This is a driver issue caused by Blackberry Link itself OR your USB 3.0 not doing its backwards compatibility correctly

    1. Uninstall Blackberry Link using IObit Uninstaller, Uninstall Tool, Advanced Uninstaller - IObit then reinstall.
    2. if that doesn't work, try using usb 2.0 port

Also check you laptop maker site for us driver or firmware updates. My new Leno Yoga running Windows 8 had a 3.0 issue that needed a driver update. Got my Z10 after I fixed that issue so don't know if it's relevant to your issue.

Hmm interesting, I actually have no usb 2.0 ports on my laptop haha and my drivers are all updated. I've uninstalled and reinstalled too which didn't change anything.

Is there an option to eject the device from the start menu?

You mean the Notification Area (Tray)? There isn't for my Q10, so I would assume it'd be the same for the Z30. There's not because it's detected as being a network device.

You could just disconnect from the right click menu in explorer, both drives if you have a microsd as well.

I had an issue with BlackBerry Link I noticed something similar but just decided to get rid of link. The software also slowed my PC down and kept re syncing something that I didn't want... My fault on that but they seriously need to fix that

USB 3.0 works flawlessly on my Windows 7 laptop and BlackBerry Link. My other laptop has Windows 8 and has always crashed on me when I used BlackBerry Link.... I sent W8 to the graveyard. Reloaded W7. Windows 8 is garbage.

This is an issue with Windows 8 and USB 3.0 data transfers. Windows 7 and USB 3.0 works fine. Link is not the issue. I think it has more to do with device manager and the windows drivers. I'm lucky to have one USB 2.0 on my new notebook.

To be honest, I don't notice a difference between USB 2.0 and 3.0.

That is mostly likely due to the fact that I'm a computer junkie and my PC's run better and faster than when they were brand new.

You will only notice a difference with devices that utilize 3.0 read write speeds. Most stuff out there now are still made for 2.0 including our BlackBerrys. I don't see how it would affect 3.0 ports or drivers. I kind of want Windows 7 back. Windows 8 blows.

Windows 8 is more than great if you have a tablet, especially the Surface. On a non-touchscreen laptop or desktop? Not so great.

I have a touchscreen notebook. Still not great. My screen has nothing to do with the preference. I can understand it being a good tablet but it is buggy to me as a laptop. Hopefully the changes coming soon make it better.

    No, the OP's Z10 won't connect properly through a 3.0 USB port.

Same thing happens to me, plug in my z10 and the computer crashes and gives me a watchdog error. I have three 3.0 slots and one 2.0 slot, I don't think I've tried it with the 2.0. I'm also on a windows 8 hp laptop....

Luckily I can connect wirelessly. I'll try the 2.0 though.

    This isn't entirely correct

Here is what works with my USB 3 ports in W8 x64:

    - ASUS Transformer Prime TF201.
    - Sandisk USB 2 Memory card reader.
    - Kingston USB 3 Memory card reader.
    - Canon 20D, 400D and 450D DSLRs.
    - Patriot Rage USB 2 32 GB USB Flash.
    - Kingston Data Traveller USB 3 64 GB USB Flash.
    - Samsung Galaxy S3.
    - External USB 2 1 TB drive (Seagate).
    - External USB 3 2 TB drive (Western Digital).

What doesn't work connected to the USB 3 ports:

    - Samsung Galaxy S2 (same problem as Blackberry - see below this).
    - Blackberry Q10.
    - Blackberry playbook 64GB.

Also note, I had this same issue in Windows 7 x64, which is what prompted me to upgrade to Windows 8 in the first place ... which didn't resolve anything.

The interesting thing, the S2, Q10 and PB all charge rapidly off the USB3 ports, but the computer has no idea any device is connected. No matter, they're recognized when connected to the USB 2 ports.

At any rate, it seems inaccurate to call this a Windows 8 problem.

It is in fact a win8 problem. USB3.0 has fallback (compatibility) modes which are negotiated when the device is inserted. You must explicitly start the higher modes. Setting the DP pin high dictates full speed (12Mb), the DN pin indicates standard (1Mb). To get High speed (USB2.0+) you must set to full speed, then negotiate your settings. If a device is USB2.0, it won't and can't negotiate USB3.0 settings.

Secondly, a driver should never cause the system to crash - this indicates a badly written driver. Error modes should be catered for and not cause a system lockup.

The drivers on win8 are to blame. Linux (and even win7) doesn't have this problem.

PS. I design embedded systems including USB transceivers for a living

Evidently Windows 8.1 has somewhat improved the situation; I'll try it out once I euthanize the drivers that 8.1 damaged and replace them with new ones...
