    Hi!
What do you guys think: how long will there be support for older phones with new OS updates? I am thinking about getting my sister in law a cheapish Z10. She does not like how her Sony phone does not get any updates for Android anymore. So I figured up until now update support has been really great for the Z10 and it would be a well suited phone for her. But at the same time I wonder, how much longer will BB support this 2 years old phone?

For as long as the hardware can keep up with the new software features. BlackBerry was very good at supporting last gen devices (OS 7 etc) , I don't think that's going to change for BB10 devices .

I'm not a fan of any device or manufacturer and trying to be realistic. BlackBerry company is fighting for survival. Passport and Classic don't sell as expected. It's hard to see one around, carriers keep very low stock, some don't even offer BlackBerry products at all. I wouldn't be surprised if Chen makes a decision to discontinue hardware and OS development by the end of 2015. Z10 is cheap because it's a 2012 hardware device. Do you really want to get your sister something outdated with unclear support?

My hypothesis, and this is purely a guess, is that the support for z10 will continue. I say that merely because the brand new classic has the exact same hardware/specs. So there is no reason that the z10 wouldn't be able to run any OS the newest phone from blackberry can.

    That's a good point.

My 2 cents, if the Z10 does what she wants it to and you can get it for cheap, you've got nothing to lose. That's why I bought a Q5 even though I knew the specs weren't amazing it was $150 outright and now if something happens to my primary phone I have a capable spare.

It is hard to say, but government departments are still handing out Z10 and Q10 (even 9900) devices. They wouldn't be doing that in there wasn't going to be support available.

Only because they are using BES and IT people don't care much. Government departments may change equipment 3 times per year... using your money. Also, they don't care about Android Runtime, color LED notifications or Battery Saving Mode. I used to have company BB10 device with 5 apps installed and locked, including Settings.

If BlackBerry iron out the current issues they have introduced with BlackBerry 10.3.1 then I wouldn't worry about not receiving any more updates because the device would work and work well.

Z10 et tal will still get any security/bug updates for years but sometime down the road they may not get all the feature updates like a Blend 3.0.

Z10 is a very reliable phone and inexpensive. Mine still works great and does everything I ask of it. I would have no hesitation in recommending it.

I just switched back to the z10 after a year hiatus. I installed the latest leak and it's like having a new phone. Now that verizon just pushed out denim and 8.1, I have some decisions to make...

Sony has Xperia Z1 and Z3 Compact. Both are successful. My family use both of them. Even Sony will sell their mobile division.

Then Blackberry creating Z30 Compact. I would glad to buy it, whatever the price.

    Hopefully

The Z1 Compact looks very similar to the Z10 but the Camera is superb for a relatively cheap device.

Never seen that. Most of the departments I've worked with are still using the 9900s they got to replace their 9000 s after 3 years. Only seen the one using BB10.

Despite Mr Happy's doom and gloom,

The Z10 just got a complete update and even before this it was still silky smooth , I had mine from new.
I never thought " wow, this phone needs an update " and it's better now so for the price go ahead it's a great deal

Yeah correct, couldn't expect the "Rio" became Compact. But, as long as Black berry don't have Compact version like Sony. Then I will keep my Z10 till die.. now is cheap and hardware still good enough for daily heavy usage

On Windows Phone every update brings a lot of improvements and you get long support. BB can offer the same because they have hard- and software within one company. But that being said BB first must fix the big bug fest called BB10.3.1.
