found a quick and easy way to put phone into silent. hold the volume down button in, phone vibrates and its muted. likewise hold volume up button in and ringer comes back on. Havent read this anywhere, im sure its already noted somewhere but new to me

Not sure this works that way - have you tested it?

In our tests the volume buttons control the System volume - not the notification volume. So that means that the buttons control music, media etc. but not phone or alert tones. To silence those you have to change profiles or turn the Notification volume all the way down.

definitiely if you hold down the volume down button then once volume is down press it again phone goes into notifications off (bell with a line comes up) top left of screen same as if you manually select notifications off. one tap of up volume turns on notifications again. If you manually set it through menu then the volume up/down it doesnt change it..

side buttons lower media vloume only. can't get ringer mute. any idea

This does work for notifications or media. It is all dependent on if you have the always adjust media volume set to on or off.
