No need to minimize Facebook to receive notifications.

Same with me sometimes. That will last for a day or so, then notifications go back to normal

im no expert but i believe that the facebook notifications aren't pushed, they're pulled, at intervals. whenever you open the actual facebook app, it automatically pulls--regardless of where the phone left off in the last interval--and then it provides you the notificaitons. I think that if you open facebook during mid-interval it is the reason why all of a sudden your notifications show up..

this is just my thoughts, i dont actually know

Yeah pretty sure you're correct. Been like this for a while. I think even on legacy devices.

Well, I never open the Facebook app, yet I get notifications, so it must be pushed

No it pulls at intervals, push means it's constant.... what he was saying is when you open the app it auto pulls regardless of place in interval.

Ahh I see. But there is something wrong, because sometimes I will not get a notification all day. Then I open the app and several notifications come through. Just today, I have not been getting chat notifications, but have been getting other Facebook notifications. I need to open the app to get the chat notifications.
