How is this possible? My z10 had been running on empty for about 3 hours...

Perhaps yours has the deluxe Matter /Anti-Matter power system.

My understanding was that batter / meter calibration takes place in the event if a battery pull.

Reboot the phone by holding down the power button. Keep the button pressed down all the way through the reboot until the round loading blue Squircle appears. This is a full reset of the device. Then plug the phone into a charger until it is totally full.

I heard leaving the battery out for half an hour, plugging the phone in for a minute, and then inserting the battery should do the trick.

also it's rumored that if you let it drain to <10% then do a full charge from time to time helps keep it "calibrated"...

What I do is, let the phone die (0%)
Leave it for an hour without the battery, and then charge have worked eveytime
Once it didnt work so I left it without the battery for a whole night, and worked.

ya gotta be careful doing this,,, li-ion batteries generally don't like to be drained completely & you may get into a situation where you end up stack charging & that's just not much fun,,, that's why i just go to 10% +/-, then do a full charge...
