Pretty basic question here, and I'm admittedly a novice: I replaced a malfunctioning Z10 (camera) recently, but backed up my device beforehand. Prior to that, I had forgotten - gulp - that I had encrypted my media card. So, my new device is not recognizing it, and I don't believe I can restore media from a backup as it appears the backup is device specific (?!).

Questions:

1. Is there a way to restore my old device backup to the new device or are backups tied to a specific device?
2. Before I reformat my media card, should I try anything else or is that encryption key tied to the old device?
3. Any other options?

I would think however that you CAN restore the back up to the new device. So long as it is the same model. Then decrypt the files. Might be wrong on that though.

Basically the encryption key as I read it is part of the old device data. It gets wiped when you security wipe. But the backup should contain it. That paired with entering the correct password should allow you to decrypt. Right?

Nope, without the original device that encrypted the media card, you are out of luck. The only way, is to have backed up the media card prior. You can copy the files over or restore them - but if you encrypted the media card with no backup copies of the card, you can't get to the data anymore. I never encrypt my media cards just for that reason.
