My Z only lasts 3-4 hour before it needs a full charge if I use it. Here is what I have done to it:
    1. Turned off LTE. Using 4G. Sorry, but 4G is better coverage in my area than 3G.
    2. Turned off the diagnostic tools.
    3. Turned off GPS.
    4. Brightness 30-50% depending on where I am.

I don't leave any apps open unless I am listening to music. There aren't 3 or 4 apps open at any one time. Whats app is never left open as I just work off of the notifications and then close the app when done. Can't think of anything else to do to improve the battery life. I've received the ATT update.

    Apps:
Standard BB apps: FB, Twitter, Linkedin, 4square, Slacker, BB Newsstand, Weather (Accuweather), youtube, Storymaker, Box, Dropbox, Compass, QR code scanner, the ATT apps, Storymaker, maps, docs to go, bridge, BBM,
    other apps:

    Apollo
    Kindle
    Tunein
    Police Scanner
    Whatsapp
    Crackberry
    Skyscanner
    Star Tracker
    La Parisian
    Battery Guru
    Flixster
    Flashlight Free
    Sayit
    Wall Street Journal

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

What OS version are you running? Updates usually solve/fix most battery issues.

Box and Dropbox - do you keep yourself logged into these when the apps are closed?

Oh god, I do. Do they drain battery if you're logged in even when you close them? That wouldn't make sense to me since nothing can currently run without being in an active frame.

Well you still have the option of saving to box or dropbox if the App is closed (if you choose to remain logged in); go to file manager and you'll have the option of Device/SD Card/Box/DropBox. I don't know for certain, but I assume that this would keep them syncing (they're baked into the OS, just like Evernote). I'm not sure how often they sync, but presumably this would contribute to the battery drain?

    never used those two.

But it seems like my crackberry app is constantly updating. wonder if that affects it.

How much are you using the phone?

I'm coming upon 5 hours of very heavy use right now, and I've got 30% battery remaining. (AT&T, .116)

However, if I use it for navigation or music, the battery life is shortened considerably.

I'd suggest using battery guru to monitor draw and voltage. It is accurate enough to allow you to see sudden drops or problems with specific apps, as long as you keep a log of what you opened and when.

How long have you had the phone? Takes about a week for the battery to learn I had the same problem but got way better over time.

A month. What's bothering me is no matter what I do, the battery does not improve. turning off the LTE didn't do anything.
